Has anyone had any experience using shimano m545 pedals? They're listed as downhill or freeride but alot of review mention xc riding.

ill just be doing manly dam and redhill.

Hi there Hairy
I used these until a couple of months ago
(I have 2 sets - let me know if you want a pair cheap or to try out. I'm in the mountains though)
They are fine for XC, but they are heavy in comparison to other more XC pedals
That's probably why they're FR or DH
The metal cage is strong and can take a beating

Having said all that, I actually find my XT's easier to clip into
Sometimes I would rely on the cage rather than the cleat as I couldn't clip in in time
I remember Harry telling me this when I used them and I agree

Best to probably use them with a more rubbery soled shoe to aid grip
I would be a bit dubious to use them with the carbon soled slippery ones I have now

I've ridden both MD and Red Hill (ahhh, red hill) with them and no probs whatsoever
I did use them with a grippier shoe though

Yeah, I like them. They are probably a bit heavy so I switch to the cage-less M520 for racing. But most of the time I find the M525 really good.

If you set them with low release tension they are great in more technical trails where you may have to dab your foot. Also good for tricky bits with short run ups where you don't have time to retry clipping in it you miss the first time.

Work well with my cheapy shimano lace up shoes.

Hope you don't mind if I jump in here and ask a related question?

I was tossing up between these and the Shimano 540's. I do mainly trail riding but bang the pedals around a bit so wondering if it's worth going for the 545's seeing as they are a bit more protected. Everywhere I read says the 540's are great and work well in mud etc...

I use 540's and have been pretty happy with them, they've also had their fair share of rock contact and still work well.
