Manly Dam records for single speed, fixed gear or unicycle?

Hi guys,
I tried searching but couldn't come up with anything. Anyone have any records or good times for doing a loop at Manly Dam either on a single speed, fixed gear or unicycle? I'm trying to compare my times with others. I just broke my personal best the other day and did it on a 26" unicycle in 54 minutes and 4 dismounts. My goal is to do it under 50 minutes with 1 or 0 falls. Let me know if you ride a unicycle, single speed or fixed bike so I have something to compare to. Also, just curious to what the record is for the fastest time on any bike if anyone knows?

Now... remembering this is just a bit of fun and we don't encourage 'crazy' activities at the Dam, but...

... one also has to understand that cycling is a sport and the natural progression for any rider is to try and better themselves at their sport and the only way to measure that is by timing laps.

So that said, you probably want a fixed/SS/Unicycle section of hot laps?

Looking at this you can see Fankles has smashed out a 26:37 since the 'upgrades'. Remembering that this is now noticeably smoother and quicker than before second in line is love4riding (who happened to win the Angry Doctor 100 outright yesterday - nice one!) got in a 28:05 before then. Incidentally love4riding has also recorded 30:49 on a crosser... niice.

Rob,

Good on you for trying to discourage people from going faster and faster on the MD track. As I’ve said before, it is a privilege to ride MD, NOT a right so inappropriate speed MUST NOT be encouraged.

But I disagree with your notion of “faster laps is the ONLY way to measure progress”
Try the following:

- Go up a hill (heartbreak Hill) in a higher gear
- Try a tech section at a slower speed – develop control / balance.
- Try the harder line, not just the quickest / easiest line.

Progress isn’t just speed. Its also technique.

Anyway, I could drag on and easily jump on a soapbox but I think that most people know how to keep things on track Eye-wink

try and stay on the track!

That means ride around the corner, don't cut it Eye-wink
Before the rock steps, stay on the board walk don't ride around it to make your approach better Eye-wink

OK that was two and that is where I will stop

hey I saw some crazy dude riding it on a unicycle yesterday... looked to be riding the wrong way around and thoroughly enjoying his ride. would that be a full suspension unicycle ? Smiling

At 6'4", the soap box would give me vertigo Eye-wink

Thanks for the info guys! WOW, under 27 minutes on two wheels, that's f'ing fast. So I guess with one wheel and no gears or coasting, twice that isn't too bad...but I'll try to get it under 50minutes. Might have to switch to shorter cranks... Anyone have any times for Manly for bikes with no gears or only one gear? Or a fixed gear? Just curious...I'll try and create a hot lap for it but don't know if I can figure out how to do it...

And I do understand that Manly Dam is not a racecourse but that's the nice thing about a unicycle is you can only go as fast as you can pedal! Therefore it's not nearly as dangerous as a bike...

Don't think it was me as I always ride clockwise, which is the correct way right? And the only suspension a unicycle has is low pressure in the tube/tire, a thick foam seat and your knees!

.....fast lap times is great fun.... and a great way to push yourself and quantify your training and fitness. That said, I always try do my "hot-laps" at first light on a weekday so the track is pretty empty and almost certaintly clear of newbies.

Matt has a point too though, and his suggestions should be noted. I think that if you are too slow or unfit to pursue a hot lap then it makes great sense to try out the alternative measures of improvement Eye-wink

My risk of injury would be a million times greater if I was to ride that thing Smiling I'm still in awe that you are looking to do hot laps on a unicycle.
