Warringah Council Unstructured Recreational Plan

According to the agenda on their website Warringah Council are to discuss the Exhibition of the Recreation Strategy next Tuesday night (Sep 22). Agenda is here:

http://www.warringah.nsw.gov.au/council_then/War...

Draft strategy can be downloaded here:

http://www.warringah.nsw.gov.au/council_then/doc...

The strategy recommends:

Undertake a mountain bike and off road cycling research paper in an attempt to address the increased use of natural areas for cycling and to investigate the provision of at least one other permissible riding area in Warringah.

I hope we can view this as a small step towards a second authorised riding area.

It is slightly disappointed that the report doesn't make recommendations for better management of the cycling trails at Manly Dam but at least MTB is recognised as a significant recreational pursuit.

... is the major issue impeding progress at the moment. They need evidence to be able to back any strategy recommendations. Without evidence, any proposed strategy that is focussed on mtb will be challenged by other interest groups with cries of "where's your evidence?"

So I think we need to make sure that those conducting the research aren't the same kind of mtb-ignorant wallies that seem to be "advising" Warringah Council re: Manly Dam trail maintenance at the present time,

I think we need to raise questions along the lines of:
* In light of the disenchantment among the mountain bike community regarding the current Manly Dam trail maintenance program, what are you going to do to ensure that those conducting the research on off-road cycling have the required subject matter expertise to offer an informed opinion?
* Will you undertake to ensure that the International Mountain Biking Association is involved, so that its experience in sustainable trail location, design and construction is used to enable the best possible outcome for all stakeholders?

I agree with hawkeye and put forward that we need organize a "response" meeting to the draft with the council, and strongly recommend that the wahringah area be audited by the likes of World trail (they are currently Auditing The Hornsby shire apparently..see below attached) They investigate every possible MTB area in the entire area, finding out the pros and environmental cons of MTBing there and hand it in a full report to whoever contracts them, northern beaches mountain bikers members pooling together or the council.

Once that is done, they also can be hired to design the trails and how they can be built sustainably.
If need be, they can even build it. But I'm sure there are enough volunteers around to build and at the same time make the whole thing much more financially viable to the council.
IMBA must be involved, but in my opinion so must World Trail (as Glen Jacobs the owner loves mountain biking, and has built world class sustainable mountain biking trails)

Check out World Trails latest project they are working on:

Gravity Mountain Bike Club Garapine Trail Project(watch the you tube video, the single trail is sweet and goes on forever).

This is from the HSMBA site:

World Trail comes to Hornsby
Fri, 21 Aug 09
World Trail have come to Hornsby Shire, met with Council and HSMBA and have reviewed the areas identified for potential mountain bike trails. The ideas put forward by HSMBA members were compiled in a report and provided the basis for World Trails assessment. They are currently compiling a report that will be used as the basis for presentation.

For those unfamiliar with them World Trail are a world leading trail consultant company that specialize in the design and construction of mountain bike trails. They use the International Mountain Bike Association standards to ensure that trails are built that are both fun and sustainable.

Is anyone going to check this out, or is Nobmob or MWMTB going on behalf of northern beaches Mountain bikers.

Is anyone is planning on addressing the meeting? If so you have to fill in one of these i think by 3pm the Monday prior(today):

http://www.warringah.nsw.gov.au/council_then/doc...

The council has finally recognized the need for more trails formerly, let’s do this right.

Next steps anyone?

Regarding this meeting... I have written to the councillors and asked that they try and give MTB higher priority and make a more firm commitment.

I also mentioned we are slightly disgruntled with recent works at the dam and a proper management plan is needed there.

Hi guys saw this deadline in the manly daily today, so pulled it from Wahringah council online tonight.
If you haven't already commented, please do so asap, it will only take a few minutes. This effects our riding on council controlled land in the near future (please note: this has nothing to do with national park access)
