my trusty old purple GT mtb, still shiny, has shark worn sprocket teeth
and despite being bought at my LBS, the LBS mechanic says he has seen other GT bikes in the area but never the particular hub/cluster that is on my bike (519 rims)

I've not seen how it mounts so I dunno but any suggestions on should i get the same cluster despite or is a new hub and respoke the old rim to it is not really that difficult to do ?

or just buy a new wheel ready to go ?

also, i'd like a better first gear (Bedford Creek) or convert it to a 9 speed ?

I'm confused... can you take a picture of this?

marhleet's picture

would love to but as it's a wheel, it's a wheel
to me it's a wheel, so yeh, i'd love to see it too

i guess he means about the splines on the wheel mount shaft and the way the cluster splines interact
I'll pull it off at Lidsdale at some stage and get some expert opinion

marhleet's picture

has no markings on the hub visible
the sprockets do have numbers on them to say how many teeth

the locking ring over the sprocket cassette end says
Suntour Powerflo

and searching mainly shows 6spd or vintage ;-(

is that why the mechanic didn't want to start
i just want to know how standard are cassettes and would a new cassette/chain/crank set do
$1399 ? for wheel ? the bike didn't cost that much ;-(

found more details ....

a second LBS has had a go at changing it, but can't remove the old set.
must need one of those special tools to fit the Suntour.

so it's getting a new wheel, cassette, cranks and chain.
I'll post some stuff when I get it all back.

If it's Suntour, I have an old Suntour Cassette remover socket. If you bring your wheel around I could remove it for you. It's quite old, maybe 17-18yrs?

marhleet's picture

been fixed
and my (numbnutz) friend has retrieved the bike, but NOT the wheel to play with at leisure.
so no help for posterity and science and the greater good of all

the bike is a late 90's model

it's got a new wheel/cassette/cranks/chain and I haven't even seen it yet ;-(
cost me enough ...

marhleet's picture

cassette looks fairly standard, and I did ask for diff cogs
it's got a 24t and a 28t
i said 26t and 32t or thereabouts, to help with the technical climbing like the hard part of Manly Dam but also thinking of Bedford Creek. so it's another week without it while it gets more work
