Getting bikes to NZ
My hubbie and I are heading to the north island for the x-mas holidays and I was hoping for some advise as to the best way to get our bikes there. Would it be easier to lug them to the airport or has anyone shipped their bike over there for pick up. Also, does anyone know if there is a place to rent a bike carrier or should I just buy one? Thanks.
Regards,
Maria

We're going later in the year and I purchased a pair of these bags for the trip:

I picked these as had good feedback and upon arrival they do look well made. They weigh (using the very inaccurate bathroom scale test) 5.5kg each, including wheel bags and tool wrap. I figure bikes will just be in the bags or laying in the back of a hire car so rack isn't required. As Air NZ give you 10kg extra for bike carriage figure it's better to take it with you, but depends on how much other stuff you plan on taking.
I travelled through Europe and just used cardboard bike box from my local bike shop. it will take some knocks and doesnt weigh very much. and probably costs nothing if your bike shop guys are nice
All i did was remove the front wheel and wrap in bubbles and slides next to the rest of bike. back wheel stays on and will protect the rear deraileur etc. some wrapping around front forks etc will also be a good idea.
is what I will be doing for the NZ trip and I think the main thing to remember is when you remove the wheels you should fit a spacer to the forks and rear triangle to stop them being bent inwards by being crushed. New bikes have plastic ones fitted when in their original box so shouldn't be hard to get.
I'll be removing the rear deraileur if I remove the rear wheel as it's likely to be damaged otherwise.
A good thing about heading to NZ is Air New Zealand take your bike free when you fly with it.
John.
Thanks for the good advice! I box it is. We will be flying on Air NZ as well. I'm very excited for this trip.
