Fling 09 - Review
Hope you all had a great event... mine was hampered by my first mechanical DNF in maybe 10 events. Smashed Derailleur 14Km into 112km was not part of the plan! First broken derailleur in near 10yrs of MTB so I am hoping to get back on that run of reliability!
The main reason for the post is to thank Russ (Smiley) for loaning me his bike so I could ride the the last section from Wingello back to Bundanoon.
Russ was suffering a little after rides two days in a row and had decided to pull the pin even after plenty of encouragement.
The trade off was for Russ to get a lift back with Jemima. Russ agreed and so I had a ride to at least do half the intended fling.
It was a very generous offer and it really made my weekend less disappointing. Cheers Mate!

Always willing to help out a fellow mobber on the trails , sorry about the rear tyre tho must have been a hell of a funny ride back . I checked it when I got home we needed to more air into to make it seat properly I was thinking it was a bodgey tyre , but like you said it didn't seat . Hope you get your bike fixed & back on the trails , cause I know I have got to get more training in for the next one .
Cheers Russ
Hi Nobmobers - I rode most of the fling yesterday until about 70ks when my 'superlight' tubeless front tyre gave up after a waterbar landing - I was a passenger at this point. Bruises, grazes and a punture wound in my left bicep meant my ride was over.
I'd had a front punture earlier on and used both cannisters to get going again - I was walkin'.
Dylan or perhaps Declan, saved my backside by giving me a cannister so I could ride out to help and get to an ambulance. I know he was a Nobmober as he was wearing a NOBMOB jersey. DUDE You rock
Mate I hope you read this - 'thanks a million' I was the guy in the ROTOR jersey + kit with blood running down my left leg / arm / side.
For the record - I'm all good
Second year in a row the fling has beaten me... NEXT YEAR..!
Glad you are all good, you looked a bit of a state when I found you but you were still smiling, which is the main thing. Welcome to the forum
Oh and better luck next time mate, you must have been on a ripper of a time.

Hey Markymark, what tyre did you use?? I used schwalbe RR/NN nontubeless in tubeless w/ stans for the first time. SUPER SUPER fast, but i was pretty worried over those waterbars. THankfully, no blowouts.
I like the pics of my bike Why didn't u ride thru the water like I did ?
I ran Racing Ralph UST rear and Rocket Ron NON UST up front - this is the first time I'd run this combo. Previously I'd run Monorail UST front and Crossmark back, both UST versions. These seemed a little too heavy at over 700g each. Although I hadn't flatted in probably 2000k's of racing / riding.
In fairness to the Rocket Ron I had a small punture a few k's earlier up the track and I just jammed extra air in the tire and shook the wheel around until the stans worked. In hindsight, I don't think there was enough air in the tire at this point. I was running about 30psi at the start of the race so I was probably down to mid 20's by the time I hit the waterbar.. just too low. I was untidy on the landing as well so that wouldn't have helped...BURP and Bang...crunch.
I'll run the Ron for a few weeknight rides and see how we go... just to try and get some confidence back in the tire set up.
If only Schwable made 2.1's with snakeskin.......
Mark
blonde or rude and this is a general query...when i was competing in the horsey world, the thing was not to change anything AT ALL before a competition - you lot of boys, you seem to change loads of things, your tyres, your brake sets, your cranks, pedals, shocks, nix. I just simply don't get it. Why would you not train on the gear you are plannig to compete it?
Mind you, I also tend to treat a race like a normal ride, rock up and hope someone will mention if there is something drastically wrong with my bike. Other than that they are generally clean and off we go...
You ARE right blondie, but you can't rationalise with us men sometimes. We change things around to make them better, to get a competitive edge. IF it all goes to 5hit then it's the fault of everyone else but us, if it works we call it race planning
I can completely relate to swapping the tyres for lighter ones before the race, because thats what I did too. Tyre weight is always going to be a compromise between durabilty and speed, in this case it sounds like Mark was (very) unlucky.
For this race I went back to a food plan that used to work for me last year and it worked again, through a series of bad choices I learnt someting. Changing things at the last minute and ballsing it all up is the only way we can learn by our mistakes
