Personally I like to ride through puddles (on a rainy day) but yet to find myself in THAT situation.

don't ride through puddles, common MTB strategy, it's not NPWS friendly

Its funny but the puddles on the fire roads at killi were exactly the same. You never knew if they were a few mm, cm or metres deep.
