How to avoid Chain Suck??

Hi recently on my ride in NZ I got chainsuck pretty bad with all the mud and grit on the track getting onto the chain. Does anyone know if there is a mechanical means of being able to avoid chain suck? Appreciate your feedback on this thanks.

[Side note... you should ask this in the MTB Gear forum: http://nobmob.com/forum/equipment]

Anyhow, sadly, I think the only effective way to stop chain suck in bad conditions as you describe is to stop and clean the drivetrain regularly. Carry a small rag and some spare lube.

I'm guessing the only hope is that someone can recommend a decent lube, but I've found 'self cleaning' wax type lubes seem to wash off in wet conditions (although they are great on dry and dusty trails). Heavier wet lubes seem a little better, but only when you clean and re-apply regularly.

Ok, thanks, Ill defo be taking lube next time. You might be interested to know that I just called the bike shop and they said that in addition to the mud causing it, it can also relate to worn chain ring and/or worn chain. ...

but you want to look at your chain length as well.

If it is too long there will be inadequate tension from the RD to pull it off the ring.

I'm finding that I'm washing (hosing) -> wiping -> lubing -> wiping after every ride, especially after Terrey Hills with all its sand and creek crossings / puddles at present.

ok thanks

Also make sure your drive-chain isn't worn. Hooked teeth can cause chain suck.

For sure, I reckon after that last ride I probably have hooked teeth and a stretched chain. A good time for a service...thanks for your guidance.

Yep, I was getting lots of chain suck and ended up twisting my chain pretty badly, got a new chain and rear cassette and no more suck!
