The effects of Scumming
Okay as you know Ive been scumming it for quite some time now. At the end of the training in March it looked all fine and dandy for the 3Peaks, that didn't eventuate but thats another story...
I was a nervous as anything in anticipation of riding Ourimbah and considering I had done three laps of the Dam in the last six months and that was only last week and that was alos my total off road riding for the last six months.
What I did find was that I loved the singletrack climbing, the extra power provided by those long rides was frakkin brilliant. I also felt a lot more comfortable climbing those techie step ups. Managed to keep up with Rob and Co (except for the freaky fast guy) and I was in a harder ring. However what was dismal was my downhill (not the real DH) singletrack ability and to a lesser extent my cornering. Strength doesn't help for those things.
The Mont will be very interesting! How well will the climbing and XC descending go?? How fast can I go around corners?
We have three guys who have done the 3Peaks as well - ahh if only I managed to get a team of 6 that did the 3Peaks.

I have ridden , the climbing is not that much as when I get to hills like Heartbreak hill I didn't make it up when I was there at the dam , when I rode Sparrow I don't remember getting off the bike once & what I remember it is easier than Stromlo . But anyone can mark me as wrong if they like because I rode down there when the Scott 24hr was on last year .
is that you loose yor speeling arbility obveeosly!
Are you wanting to take over the spelling and gramma crown mate?

Having recently had some time off MTB (but in my case, due to injury, not some silly, self-inflicted reason like Lorrie - the 3 peaks) have to say I'd agree with a lot of this.
First ride back on the dirt was Ourimbah last week and was very sketchy for the first couple laps. Yesterday was 80% back to normal perhaps, although today at the Dam was a little bit tentative again.
FWIW, my thoughts about riding on the road - well, depending on how you do it - is that it's very good for your cardio, and good for targeting specific muscles. Reckon it makes you soft though, as perhaps the training is too targeted and you get used to cranking out many kays more and more easily, which can leave one thinking doing similar distances on the MTB might also be getting easier. But it's not. Before my recent bout of road riding I used to think you have to do at least double the distance to get a decent comparison with MTB (single track or technical MTB that is) and don't suppose that view has changed that. Erm... or perhaps I now could add: reckon you should be riding double the vertical too!
I've just started mixing it up a bit - good hit out on the road 70k + plus mtb'g another day of the week.
First impressions - i can climb in a much harder gear - which says to me the road must be giving me more strength in those legs.
I think as long as you alternate between the two all is ok.
I do like clicking over a lot more k's in a shorter time span.
Mtb'g certainly gives a much better full body workout then the road though.

Personally for me scumming is just for when the tracks are too wet and convenience. I do find if I have been on the road bike for a little bit then my track skills drop off fast.
For me, the Dam is still the most challenging for my body as it is such an all over work out and I would still struggle to do 3 x 40 minute laps in a row.
scumming is a great way to get to work. 30km ride. Should get my hardtail back from the insurer this week.
for me i ride 95% road
Why - because its easier to ride a road bike to work, plain and simple
On the weekends i am restricted by time because of family, house, kids etc, so i dont ride Mtb socially. I will do a road race or road training ride most weekends.
The Mtb is only used for Race events, like the Mont this weekend.
So for me sure i will not be the fastest around a corner or down/up a techie section but atleast i will be fit enough to get around the course at a decent pace.
I commute on a flat bar SS and race/train on a proper roadie.
I would prefer more dirt, but not happening at this point in life
