Easter Monday Manly Dam
Hello on Monday I am planning to go around Manly Dam - if anyone wants to come too (mat, paul, evan...) then that would be excellent - I don't mind what time (yes, i left that alone on purpose this time!!) because I have managed to keep the day free for horse and bike riding - yeaaay.

MEEEE Smiling

Who's in?
No confirmations as yet.
What Happened?

Were you there and have a story to tell?

...are you blonde... The date's wrong on this methinks.

But I will be there on Monday anyway.

Ta,
Matt.

christine's picture

yes, i do dye the blonde away, but you all know that already!!!
anyway, i am happy to change the time but it's still Easter Monday...

MTY's picture

It's been about a year since I last rode round the dam, but I'm keen to give it a go.

Little-Ditty's picture

My arm is being twisted. Can't... resist... Okay, I am in too!! Eye-wink

BTW - is anyone up for more than 1 lap? 2 possibly? From my point of view, this would not be a speed run. I'll leave the speed runs to the Goat Boys.

Matt's picture

Definitely up for more than one lap. I'd also like to play around a bit on the more technical bits just to really get them nailed, happy to provide tips and laughs (at my expense) in equal measure.

evan's picture

Hiya 9-lives,

I reckon I might be able to provide a few laughs for you. Looks good for Monday. If you can put up with my company, I'm up for that second lap.

Evan

Matt's picture

Looking forward to it even more now, especially with your new steed. Hopping step ups takes a bit of getting used to on your first full susser, hope you've got some elbow and knee pads! If you pay me enough I might even stand in opportune catching spots ;-} (for photo's that is)

Little-Ditty's picture

Sounds like a cool plan fellas. We are fitting in plenty of km's this Easter! Excellent work ethic.

Given the Lithgow exploits, the laughs are sure to be on me!!! Laughing out loud

Ian's picture

Sounds good! Should be up for two laps.

evan's picture

Hoping some kind person will help Christine out. She would like to borrow some platform (normal) pedals for this ride. Please drop a note here or text me, my number is in my profile.

Thanks
Evan

Dan's picture

Sounds like a plan so you can count me in too weather permitting.

Matt's picture

Just so happens I have a spare set in my toolbox, I'll even fit them for you. Just double check that the pedals you need removing have an allen key hole in the bike-ward side of the spindle, or take them off before. My adjustable wrench can be a bit too big for pedals.

Ta,
Matt.

evan's picture

Thanks 9-Lives, I'll let Christine know. I have proper pedal spanners in my toolkit which I usually bring. So between the 2 of us we'll be fine.

Cheers
Evan

Should be up for 2 laps after a Sunday of fairy floss at the show.
Thing is tho', my rear brake pads wore down on the TH ride. Going to buy some more now- would anybody be able to instruct me on how to change them before the ride. Pretty simple stuff I know, but I've never done it before.

evan's picture

Hiya Andy Bloot,

Check out this thread http://nobmob.com/node/1397.
Worst case Google is your friend.

Thanks, Evan
I'll give it a go and see ya Monday

Bernd's picture

up for more than 1 lap?, well I would like to do it...!!!
see how we go, I'll be there at 8-30!!!
Bernd

Rob's picture

Changing your pads is not as easy as it sounds. Even though I have done this before.

Complacency is not a good thing, as I have just discovered. Annoyingly. And that's putting it mildly. I'm *^&&%$ *((*^(*& OFF!!!

Just had a check on the pads after the sand action at TH yesterday. The rear is mashed - just about down to metal. The front is not looking much better. No worries - I have two spare sets. In they go.

Damn! Wheels hardly turn. Ah, fugg it, can't be bothered to bleed the lines, nothing wrong with the fluid, just too much of it. Take of the caps on the lever reservoir and pry apart the pads *gently*. *CRACK* doh - not gentle enough. One broken pad. Save yourself a few $$$ in a few seconds friends - put the old pads in before doing this Sad(

[ Yes, I'm considering starting a site of what not to do in MTB Eye-wink ]

Bernd's picture

Love my old fashion cable disc brakes......
easy to look after and still doing a very good job...
Bernd

Flynny's picture

Usually there is no need to take the caps of the reservoir, unless you've recently bled them with very warn pads. Just lever the pistons back in *before* you take the old pads out, this will force some fluid from the pistons back up into the reservoir.

Oh and bernd, no where near as much maintenance with hydros compaired to cable and they have a much better feel Shocked)

Bruce C's picture

Sounds like a nice ride. I'll be there, weather permitting.
I just about wore out my rear brake with the rain and the sand on Friday so if it's wet tomorrow and I'm not at the start, don't wait for me.

markp's picture

I may come along on this ride depending on weather (as I also had to replace my breaks after Friday).

Steve 01's picture

I had no brakes left after Fridays ride aswell .Rear pads were shot half way along the ride, but it was fun

Gilbo's picture

hey guys, just coming in from another late easter night. gotta love these 4 day breaks, so not sure if will make it out in time for the early start. am planing to be out by midday if anyone else is having a sleep in.

cheers,

alchemist's picture

I guess you've already found out, but Manly Dam is closed to riding due to the wet weather

Rob's picture

Yeah - just had confirmation from Nicole, surprised this didn't come yesterday to be honest, there may be a few people riding this morning as the news is a bit late.

Bernd's picture

Yes, Thanks everyone for a nice morning, Christine for organizing the hole "Manly Dam" ride which took place @ Morgan Rd.!?*?!><?!
Also I would like to thank Matt for his patience with us, only some!?!!! , slow rider's, and the "Pad Changing lessons on the STREET!!!
Bernd

Little-Ditty's picture

So how is everyone's bike maintenance coming along? The good news was Kuringai Cycles were open on a Monday, so the obligatory bike service is happening in time for this Saturday's MASSIVE bike ride (http://nobmob.com/node/1526).

Thanks Christine for hosting the crew on an enjoyable Easter Monday ride. Despite the crappy brake performance, the ride was still fun. After all, what would any of us rather have done on a day off?

Some videos of the ride at that roll-off section with the muddy exit have been posted on YouTube. These should be viewable sometime Tuesday evening. Will let you know exactly when.

Yeah, I second the thanks to Matt. I promise to go faster next time! Eye-wink

christine's picture

to all of you super patient people yesterday - especially Ian with his handy spare set of brake pads! and Evan for changing them with him, even if you were in the middle of the road!
everyone was lovely to ride with and of course, i am still totally in love with The Borrowed Bike!
I haven't done those tracks in daylight before and throughly enjoyed them thank you.

MEEE Smiling

ps i waited down the bottom to give Evan, Steve and Ian a lift back up after they did the down hill track at the end of the ride and I could hear those boys chatting along way before they appeared!!!

Ian's picture

Heh, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride as well. I was surprised at how tired I was when I got home - we only covered 13km or so!

Left wrist is pretty sore today though. Getting it x-rayed tomorrow. Sigh. Hope I don't miss the Saturday epic.

evan's picture

After turning up to Manly Dam to find it closed, the ride was moved to Oxford Falls.
All in all it was a great ride. Thanks to all those who came.

Hope the wrist is Ok Ian.

I'm curious as to how you knew the Dam was closed. Are there now signs?

Nicole sent out a mail 9:23am which was picked up by both Alchemist and myself. Anyone can get on the mailing list, BTW, check out the latest update.

alchemist's picture

Last time I was at the Ranger Station at the dam, they had quite a collection of freshly made Bike Trail closed due to... signs ready to go.

evan's picture

Signs were posted up at the usual car park

(btw, for those that weren't there, that single track is REALLY muddy and slippery!)
