RP23 shock upgrade for Scott Spark

I am looking at replacing the rear shock on my 2010 Scott Spark. The bike is fitted with the DT swiss M210 which does an ok job, except for the bob. You sort of jump out of the saddle then go "oh" and sit down again.

So I am looking to upgrade the rear to an RP23. Others have done this for the Spark and given good feedback on forums.

My question is about sag setting. The manual for the Spark says 5 mm. This is less than the recommended sag for the RP23.

Would I just set the sag to the recommendation of the shock, changing the geometry of the bike. Or would I set the sag to the 5mm and then not have access to all travel?

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is the shock the same length and travel?

It's difficult for manufacturers to be exact on sag settings as there are so many variables (type of riding, personal preference etc. ) so its only going to be a rough guide. The fox RP23 seems to like between 15 and 30% sag depending on how you like it. I run mine at about 25% on my yeti but i do like it on themmore plush side and tend to switch the settings depending on the race type, and also switch pro pedal around all the time during a race.

My bezt advice is to get one and play with it, there are many settings to tweak so make sure. You fully understand what they all do (if you don't already).as long as you have some sag and don't reach minimum travel (so that it's noticeable anyway) the rest is down to how tight you want the back end.

Oh and look for the 2010 model, it was greatly improved at the end of the travel.

thanks for the advice. It looks like its not an issue in terms of geometry, so its just a matter of adjusting sag to suit the ride. eye to eye and travel are the same as the original so it should be fine.

Just remember that the RP3 comes with 3 different tunes of rebound and compression damping, so whenever you buy one you need to provide details of your frame in order to get the right one. Since the Spark is not factory spec'ed with a RP3, I reckon you have to ask in forums which are the tunes recommended for it.
