I dont think at that end of the price range it makes too much difference so just pick one that you like the look of best.
I'm assuming all the bikes are in the same category ( all are hardtail mountain bikes)

Get the one with the best fork, its the one part you are least likely to upgrade. Bars, seat posts etc make no difference. Tires, chains and even derailleurs are consumables. Try to get some good disc breaks too, dual piston hydraulic. I had some single piston ones and, like the cable ones, they are a pain to keep adjusting.

They are all going to be running basically the same gear. Take them all for a test ride. There may be slight differences in their geometry and one will feel better than the others and that will be down personal preference. Even a quick lap around the car car will give you an idea.

The best fork idea is a good point and something a lot of people over look. Most people look at the rederaileur and some companies upspec this and cut cost elsewhere.

Just remember that the derailleur is relatively cheap to upgrade latter on and you'll more than likely break one and have to replace it anyway, where as better fork and better brakes will make far more difference to the ride

Also if buying new, check out length of warranty, some are shorter than others and you need to have proof of a yearly service with some (all?)too.

I'd go with your son - Giant always seem to have the best value components within most price ranges especially if you are going around 1200 - plus I think they still do a 10 year warranty on the frames (could be wrong here). I started off with a budget Giant and I still use it today as a back up bike.

Exactly as kitrou1 said

thanks for the input, yeah I've decided giant and they now actually have 35yr warranty on frames so pretty hard to go wrong aye,,, hope to see yous all on the trails.
Cheers

Test Ride them all before putting down your hard earned, ask the shop to set it up properly for YOU, then take em' for a spin even if only round the carpark, Then see which you like best.

Make sure you shop around the giant dealers in newy, you've got Breakaway Cycles at Morriset and Spocks Spokes up at Salamander bay as well. Buying two bikes you should be able to get an extremely good deal on 2010 run out models, especially if it is floor stock and they want them out the door so the 2011 bikes can fill the floor.

cheers jaseh, i thought hadleys were the only giant store around here. the avanti store are organising a ride day where you can take a bike to glenrock for a spin..

last thread get the bike shop too set u up then take it for a spin then find a few stores that have the same bike & do a deal there ,are stores off loading 2010 bikes for a song , don't pay full price & get them to throw in bottle cage , bottle & helmets too , these are essential & if you don't like the seat ask them if that can be changed for you & also purchase padded bike pants or you can go lycra its up too you . Main thing is bike set up too so your ride can be of some comfort , good luck

don't know where your shoping smiley but the best I have been able to get thrown in so far is 10% off accessories better keep looking

That sounds like the typical hadleys deal. 2010 bikes should be going for anywhere from 20-40% off. At this time of year the wholesalers are really pushing to get the old stock out of their warehouses. Great time to buy a bike if you don't mind the previous years model. i just paid $1500 for my new roadbike, shoes, pedals, helmet, bottle cages, sox and a fit which had a retail value of $2300 for the lot. I had to drive to Sydney to pick it up but that only cost me $40 in fuel.

The guys are right - just look at the specials page

http://cycologybicycles.com.au/specials/

To see some great deals on older stock. 10% is not enough discount for last years model.
