NoBMoB juniors get a win

For those curious of what eventuated from the forum request for junior team riders for the spring fat tyre festival...

We managed to get a team together made up of my son his friend and two others from the NoBMoB forum. Under the name "Agent Fox" the kids rode brilliantly all day to come away with a win.

Young Nick took off at the start and had a few raised eyebrows when the slightly built 13yo almost came through with the elites (who probably didnt immediately realise that the juniors were on a shorter lap). The team were challenged by the Tip Rats for most of the race, who were made up of some very young players, but maintained a solid 20 minute lead for much of the day. As the hours rolled past the kids organised themselves well, with none of the transition stuff ups of the grown up's team (well how are we supposed to recognise each other in lycra?)

Holding our breath hoping that no mechanical would spoil the party, it eventually came at lap 10 with a blowout 5 minutes out from the transition, with Ethan electing to to a counterflow hike back to the start. It looked like the Tip Rats may have had a more serious problem, because they seemed to drop out of contention to be replaced by the Knox team in 2nd place.

The four riders all were of similar ability and all did there bit on the day, and absolutely determined to make sure they wouldnt let anyone down. Of course the win isn't the important part but finding a few extra riding mates was the best part of the day. Junior mtb'ers are so thinly spread its hard to find kids who ride at a similar level.

So a great day. Thanks to Chris and everyone at Wannaride and Hunter mountain bike club (what a fab track)

Yeah, I saw nick come in ahead of Jason English on that first lap and thought WTF? Top stuff.

Good work lads!

Thanks again for organising the Junior team...it came together nicely! Your son Ethan is a great race strategist and a quick rider...all that track racing is paying back! Good call on returning back to the start after the early flat, and getting his team mate to start the next lap early.

And Benji is stoked to be back in the MTB scene, after having almost lost interest (teenage style) for the last 6 month.

Now he just says "Bring on the next one!" and wants to swap his Trance for a hardtail... Smiling

Nathan (our oldest rider) was excited to give his beautiful new bike a good workout; and that his first team race turned into first place (against 6 other "16 and under" teams!).

And young Nick is just an amazing dynamo...fearless and fast... the next Cadel Evans! Eye-wink

See you on the velodrome at Lidcombe or at Duncan Gray soon!

Cheers, Hans

Yeh it was great fun for my first race.
Tip rats ended up only being beaten by knox by just under 5 minutes.
My back is still a bit sore though

This is so nice to read on a rainy morning in the office.
I started MTB racing aged 11 in the UK and have moved in and out of the sport in waves ever since.

Well done to all for getting everyone involved, and getting the logistics sorted.

Well done Agent Foxes on taking out the win!

i was up at the race supporting another Jnr team 'The Young Ones' (average age of 10, they came 4th) and taking photos. I took heaps of photos and plenty of the kids as they were so happy to be out there riding. let me know their race numbers and I'll post them up. It was funny listening to their post lap chat to each other, they sounded just like adults comparing stacks, times etc. Great event for all the family!
There was only one 'incident' of the day, some jerk telling the 10yr old boy who had just gone OTB that it was a bad place to stop! bad karma on him.

Hi Chica - thx for the offer of the race photos ...the teams race numbers are below.

87 Ethan
402 Nick
487 Nathan
395 Benji

P.S. When I checked the Race results this morning it actually showed 16 laps in 08:09:29 hours. Both Nick (12) and Ethan (15) did the fastest ever juniors laps (8 kms) with 27:24 and 27:21 mins respectively. Go boys! Eye-wink

way to go boys, ok a few kms short of the adults lap distance but given Jason English is 30 (?) imagine what these kids lap times are going to be like when they mature in a few years time.
You should approach FOX now for sponsorship of the team.

Well done Agent Fox team, a great job with some fast riders. I was up there with the Knox boys. Great day. It would be fantastic if more junior teams could get involved in these events. Every rider enjoyed the experience and came home dusty, sweaty and a grin from ear to ear (beats the xbox or playstation anyday!) They can't wait till the next one. Probably JetBlack 24 next year. I'll have to have a go myself and leave the support to someone else. (a few mechanicals on the day) Gotta say Chris at Wannride did a great job.

Well done to the young guys! Hope to see them out at Yellomundee for some of our Summer 4 Hour Series (starting this Sat 4 Dec). Also, at the NSW All Schools XC - tentatively 19 June 2011. Keep an eye on www.wsmtb.com
