Fun Fun Fun...........and some cramp........and a bent rotor..............
This was our (me and my gf Rach) first ever ride at Awaba and our first go at the Spring Fat Tyre. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and loved the track, the people and the organisation, we'll def be back for more! Some highlights include:
- only 1 stack each and nothing major. mine resulting in a bent rear brake rotor (which the CBD guys fixed in a jiffy) and Rach's in some scrapes and bruises (but they didn't start hurting until the day after!)
- Rach picked up a free cycle jersey from the Wannaride guys on account of being the first person with blood and riding with a broken bone (she fractured her ankle about 5 weeks ago and still has it strapped and is riding on flat pedals). I picked up a kenda small block 8 for having an exceptionally bald front tyre!! Bonus!!
- Awaba has to be my favourite track so far (ok, coming from a small base). lots of flow and speed but having some power in the legs was needed also for the switchbacks (jason english came by me twice on the switchbacks leading up to the camelback climb and it all looked so easy!)
- didn't have any issues with passing or being passed. everyone seemed very chilled and friendly, from elites to punters.
- have to seriously revise my nutrition or devise a method to stop cramping. my 4th lap was a disaster because i cramped badly and just had to stand by the side of the track for 10 minutes waiting for my quad to ease off. then virtually rolled back. i didn't even go out for another lap, thankfully rach did an extra to get us to 10 laps.
- don't think our 2008 giant alias and yukon are going to last much longer. clearly not bad enough to win the kona though so will eek some more life out of them first. good excuse for being as slow as i am i reckon!!!
- climbed camelback climb on my first 3 laps but decided to try and save some energy on the 4th (to no avail)
my times were as follows:
lap 2:39.10
lap 4: 41.27 (stack with bent rotor lap)
lap 6: 41.01
lap 8: 50.24 (massive cramp!!!!)
Rach did
lap 1:46.54 (including stack)
lap 3: 48.02
lap 5: 49.11
lap 7: 50.58
lap 9: 56.43
lap10: 1.01.04
As an added bonus got to listen to england pile on record breaking amounts of runs at the Gabba too. A great day indeed!
