G'Day all.

I had a nice holiday in NZ and came home to a little surprise sitting at my oldies place;

I have been considering a new bike for a few months, but really needed to wait until Aprilish to have the money. I had got the short list down to a few, namely either a Stumpy, Trance, Reign, Roscoe or Remedy. In the end I guess I was like Andy where I got offered a deal I couldn't resist. Luckily my wife let me buy the bike early as I guess she knew I'd be dissapointed if I missed the opportunity. Had it posted over from a shop in Adelaide as there were none left around here.

I had a few specs that I definately wanted.

Tapered steerer; check

15 or 20mm axle and a decent set of brakes; check

Photobucket

Decent fork and shock; check

The rest of the specs I was flexible on. The bike actually came with XO shifters and rear derailleur, but I cant up-shift Sram rear shifters so I had to get it changed. The shop offered to fit XT for no cost if they kept the XO, a bit of a down-grade but with labour costs I guess I ended up ahead.

Other specs are;

XT cranks;

Photobucket

Rhythm pro scandium wheels;

Photobucket

And stupidly big motorbike tyres;

All in all its an awesome ride. Its really light for a 140mm travel rig and will benefit from some smaller tyres.

Photobucket

I hit up Yellowmundee yesterday and it rides awesome. Still need to fine tune the suspension but I need to talk to a few of you guys on rides to get the best set up I think.

Still need new pedals but I'm not allowed to spend any more money for a while now so the old ones will do. Also new tyres are on the radar but ill destroy these ones first.

Looking forward to the next BMORC ride to show it off!

Cheers,

Ian

I've always loved the look of Gary Fisher bikes
Something about the geo or whatever
And that's a real solid spec - real solid

You'll be killing it now

Very nice!!!

moggio's picture

Yeah I like it.... be nice to see it in person one day.

Ian, i have some pedals here that are in good nick if you want to borrow them, i love this bike, i hooked up with Craig??, your mate with the black roscoe also, we talked about you and this bike, this will really accelerate your riding, also the xt spec is very very good, between sram and shimano there is not much difference anyhow, let me know and i can come around with the good shock pump and really set your bike up to scream.
Now to Mt York for some serious techy riding!
Well done mate, it looks sooo good in that white!

Ian_A's picture

Thanks for the replies guys.

G'Day Todd,

I've got pedals, I just want new ones to go with the bike! also I've got a jetblack shock pump so thats all good. Just need advice on fine tuning.

Craig is a champ eh, he started riding with us at Yellowmundee. I thought he was my mate from works mate and my mate from work thought he was my mate, turns out he just started riding with us randomly. He's pretty nuts on the techy stuff, not much he can't ride and he's fit too - it sucks trying to match him but I love trying to keep up. I went for the Roscoe after riding Craigs - just a well made thrasher bike.

I'm still off for another week and a bit so any ride you're keen for let me know, night ride or day I'm keen.

Real nice Ian, I love that look. It's classy!!

Come down to Knapsack for a ride.

BM Epic's picture

Ahh i scared the bejesus out of him when we went to my bit of d/h track and then reversed the single track to the nursery, he loves his jumps though, just doesn't like steep techy stuff, he likes fast in the air insanity, it was a good ride because i caught him after he had ridden a long climb, he is pretty fit, but he was telling me he just freaks on the steep rocky techy stuff, i think you will become an awesome techy rider now that you have the bike to handle it!
The pump that i have doesn't lose air when putting on and off, it has 2 valve screw on's to stop that little air escape happening, it gives you a very accurate reading on your pressures. How about riding and sorting on friday arvo?
Take it to Blue gum or grose head, ghs single track is excellent for setting up shock and fork pressures!

Ian_A's picture

Yep, should be ok.

I'm helping the inlaws move from Penrith up to Glenbrook on Fri but should be finished by the arvo.

Hopefully me and Dave_B are hitting up Mt Annan on Thursday weather permitting.......

Ill send a PM later in the week Todd.

Cheers,

Ian

G'Day Mic,

actually rode Knapsack yesterday as well and got lost somehow! I think we ended up on the DH track cause it was basically unridable for us and we came out on Mitchell pass. We just rode up and came back in to the quarry so it was ok.

I just can't get my bearings round there - I'm not sure why. Normally I pick up tracks pretty quickly but not knapsack!

Catch up soon.

Ian

Your bike is as flash as a rat with a gold tooth!

ChopStiR's picture

I would be up for a friday arvo depending on time.

Basic setup

Front shock psi equals your weight (i.e. if you 70kg, then set pressure for 70psi) plus 5% for lost air when removing pump = 73.5(unless you have a pump like todds Eye-wink)

Rear shock psi equals your weight converted to pounds (i.e. if your 70kg x 2.2 =154psi) plus 5% for lost air when removing pump = 162psi

Rear rebound:
Set rear to max (fastest). Ride the bike off the street gutter while sitting. The bike should feel like its bounced back up and down a few times. Adjust 1-3 clicks, Keep count. Repeat until the bike returns to riding hieght and does not bounce back down again.

Front rebound:
Set Front Shocks near max again. Stand next to the bike and lean over the bars. Compress the forks and hold. Then unweight and lift. You want the wheel to lift off the ground straight away. lf your suspension rebounds more quickly then you are able to lift the wheel, then its to fast and you need to slow it down. Repeat until you are able to lift from ground.

I have found these the best to get started, you can then tweak acordingly.

Hey Ian, certainly looks good, and I'd be real happy with XT gear.

I'll be keen to see it in action...

Ian_A's picture

Thanks Tim,

I had the pressures right, I just set the comp and rebound on feel so ill have a go at those methods and see how close I am. Just need to find a gutter! they dont exist up here.

Cheers

Well, the better half decided she wanted to start riding a bit more and wanted a new bike.
After looking around for over 3 months for a decent 2nd hand dually I was getting pretty over it. I was shocked how much people thought a 2-3 year old mtb was worth. I was pretty open on type - anthem, trance, epic, stumpy, remedy, fuel, spark, anything that was a small or medium frame and decently priced was considered. I missed a couple of good ones on eBay and was checking on rotorburn almost every day but wasn't willing to pay 2k for a 2nd hand bike that will most likely just plod around firetrails
In the end we bit the bullet and bought new - we were visiting friends up the coast and stopped in at Cycology in Tuggerah. They sorted us pretty quickly and with a good price. Funny thing was we paid less than people were asking for for 2nd hand bikes.
2011 Trance X3. Added a womans specific saddle, much cheaper than the equivalent womans bikes.

Love the Blue ... can't go wrong with a trance.

BTW ... looking forward to readying your gripes when you start trying to sell Sticking out tongue I hear Karma coming.

The Brown Hornet's picture

Nice. Makes Beth's Trance look a bit outdated!

BM Epic's picture

Way to go Ian, looks the goods mate!

Ian_A's picture

So another frame bit the dust. This one was a different fault but another one that seems common to the Roscoe.
I was given the option this time of another Roscoe for a straight swap with my gear or a Remedy. The catch with the Remedy was that I would have to buy a new front mech, BB and cables (no full length for Remedy's?).
The benefit of the Remedy was that they could get me a 9.9 carbon! Pretty obvious choice.
Currently running full set up from the Roscoe but at least one change is on the cards if things pan out like I'm hoping. Also got the rear upgraded to bolt up maxle
Picked it up yesterday and just did a quick 20km on the road today to test it out. Need to tinker with suspension settings and possibly either put the 90mm stem back on or get a 70mm (will test the 50mm first) but it feels fast.
I didn't see them actually do it but the boys said it weighed in around 12.9kg on their scales. That's running tubeless 2.25 Ardents and the Rhythm Pro's that are just under 1800g. Pretty happy with that as a XC come AM bike.
Waiting anxiously for some clear weather to test it out properly......

That's an awsome upgrade.

Nerf Herder's picture

Now I understand ... no brainer on the choice.

I can hopefully help you with a 70mm if your not in a rush Smiling

Ian_A's picture

Thanks Al,
I saw your new stems of facebook, look the goods. I'll hit you up for a price once I've actually got to ride this thing offroad.
I dropped down to a medium frame, which is what I should be on (18.5 effective, 17.5 actual - not sure what that means but the old 19" frame was slightly too big). I've got the original 90mm stem that I can try out if the 50mm feels too short.

BM Epic's picture

Gee thats nice Ian, i think the 36's will be the go, looks good now, also i think that bolt up rear end is a big plus, 50 or 70 mm stem will really have it firing down those decents!

Andrei74's picture

Hey mate I've got a 70mm stem if you wanna try...Looks the goods BTW
