Details:

The SRAM Singletrack Mind Series features six mountain bike endurance events, of 7 or 8 hours duration. They will take you to six different locations in NSW and ACT, each one renowned for its flowing singletrack and fun factor.

It's new and still a work in progress, but Mt Annan Botanic Garden are committed to creating a mountain bike facility that will really rock. Naturally we're delighted to have been invited to have a round of the SRAM Singletrack Mind series there and by Round 5 on 18 September 2011 we're told it will be a very much more evolved venue than it is now! Add to that a pump track competition and Cinema Under the Stars the evening before - we think this round will be awesome!

Are there any people off here doing this?

craked's picture

Do we get to use the recently cut in sections in this event ?
@Pete B do you guys have a shelter/tent thingy to use on sunday?

Fi's picture

Yes, the new stage 3 section will be used for the race! Check out some pics on Enduro Pulse from yesterday's preview ride - http://www.enduropulse.com.au/articles/features/....

Pete B's picture

@Craked, I don't, not sure about Ben. We didn't have one at Wingello.

I'll bring my bike stand and my garden sprayer for cleaning this time though.

Edit:- just checked out your link Fi, the new aditions look great fun. I'm going to see if I can get off work early Saturday and do a couple of recce laps.

Take the sunscreen. The weather's looking awesome for this weekend. A total contrast to last weekend Smiling

craked's picture

Pete might try to do the same sat arvo ,I'll try and organise a quick shade sounds like we will need it

Scottboy's picture

give me a holler if you need to borrow mine ?

Lach's picture

wonder if the chocolate foot folks are going to station a first aider in the magpie attack zone for the inevitable stack that will happen if he goes for someone in traffic??

Fi's picture

Your best bet here will be to be riding in a group! Yesterday on our ride with 11 people we saw no sight of him. Hopefully he'll be so worn out after the first hour of the event he'll give up anyway!

Scottboy's picture

I will come along with a slingshot as the little shite went for me twice ..

Lach's picture

For the most outrageous anti-magpie helmet? Or best wound??

hawkeye's picture

... or a prize for the best magpie pie once you get the little blighter with smiley's slingshot Eye-wink

craked's picture

the weather is looking great for sunday ,went out this arvo and put my quickshade up and the place was allready buzzing ! Smiling

Scottboy's picture

I got offered too work yesterday so I didn't get to use the slingshot I made at work , how was the little black & white fellow yesterday at the race? Many people get attacked or was he moved away ?

ChopStiR's picture

I never saw him! Heard someone say they got swooped 4 times in the practice lap and that was all i heard. Nothing else. I think he didnt have the endurance.

Brian's picture

The preliminary results are up.

Pete B's picture

I got swooped numerous times on the Saturday practice. He never made contact but came close. I couldn't believe the balls of this bird, when I came round the corner he was sat right in the middle of the trail. As he saw me, he flew straight up in the air and swooped me from the front!

Luckily he wasn't out Sunday or it could have got dangerous. Probably so many riders going past that he realised no-one was a threat.

Great days racing though - I've put a blog up of our events if anyone's interested.

Good to get in my first real race in a relaxed and friendly team. We managed to get free entry by Tim helping with the trail build and having his name pulled from the hat. Thanks for the freebie Tim!
We had a good day and while we rode fairly hard, we were just there for fun - my best lap was a 32min, worst was a high 34min so fairly consistent (4 laps).
Riding 2nd I saw mainly clear ground, but did get caught up in a few spots - nothing like the first lap from what I hear though.
I think actually riding every part, including all A-lines and pinch climbs, and leaving the bike in middle ring for all the climbs gained me plenty of time over the less-technical riders.
Luckily we had no mechanicals either.
I tried to have a quick 1 or 2 sentence chat with most people I passed and tried to say G'Day to all the marshals around the track. I actually pulled pretty much off the track for the riders passing me, just because I would feel bad holding them up. Most people were friendly but there were a few stories of 'faster' riders being fairly rude to others - I didn't experience anything though. I guess these riders aren't just there for fun like some of us and take things more seriously.

tate's picture

what a hard day out.

it was a track which definitely suited the skilled rider with alot of off camber corners and tricky rock gardens. i didnt see the point in the quite large rock garden just beyond a fast dip where youre carrying alot of speed and need enough momentum to make it up the other side - it was probably about 5km in.

im still not sure about the 5 tight hairpins within about 8m of each other... it felt like i was a monkey swinging from the trees rather than in a bike race!

i had a very consistent day out with the exception of my first lap where i experimented with bar ends, and one of my middle laps where i flatted and lost six minutes. all other laps within 30s of each other which was very pleasing.

lesson learnt from this one - i dont gel with bar ends!

our two man team completed 17 laps and rolled in 7th overall. we made back one of the two places i lost while fixing my flat, but couldnt claw back the other.

Pete B's picture

I thought the tight hairpins where a strange feature too. Adds to the variety I suppose.

craked's picture

Great effort Tate, you were flying when you past me ! terrific day though well done to chocolate foot for an excellent event.

Scottboy's picture

It is a course that you have too keep pushing the limits too keep up the speed & I know what you mean by the rock garden but at least they took the ones out after the the double logs with the berm after it there used too be 3 there , now there is only 1 after the berm which is better for everybody .

obmal's picture

fun course, but seemed hard work as well? I liked the various jumps and the rocky technical sections (the two with a and b lines) and the berms were massive.
Nice family feel about the event, all the other teams were super friendly.
I was camped right next to the ambo's.. a sign of things to come? as I was one of the "off to hospital" finishers, impaled my leg on a tree branch, thanks to the riders that helped out. was a gory sight for sure.
I spent today in hospital waiting for my turn on the table to remove the last bits of the tree from my leg.

Pete B's picture

Bloody hell, that sounds painfull!

I heard one guy broke his collar bone on the really steep log roll over. When I went past shortly after, the marshals had roped off the obstacle.

Definitely not a course to be taken lightly.

Brian's picture

@Dave, hope you are ok. What part of the leg was it and how long does it look you'll be out of action?

obmal's picture

Thanks Brian, outside of the shin midway up, went up and back into the calf.

I'll be off the MTB for perhaps two weeks, apart from the pain I cant see why I cant ride the road bike slowly (no more Commuter Cup Podiums for me??) to work next week though? as I gotta keep some legs fom the Kanangara thingy in October.

I was lucky there as there wasn't a whole lot of blood? not sure why as there was a vein clearly severed and hanging out? but I'll be carrying a trauma bandage in the back pack from now on.

Thanks again to anyone reading this (Ian??) that helped me out on the track and also packing up all my stuff, I guess that's whats just so cool about the MTB community.

craked's picture

wow sounds ugly ,hope you have a speedy recovery obmal and are good for Kanangra.

Scottboy's picture

not a good way too finish a day on the bike hope you got a few laps in before your off .

obmal's picture

Thanks, I was on lap 7, so yes indeed I got a good 60K ride in, I was planning on doing 10 laps and I was enjoying the day, lap times were mid to high 30's and as I was doing it solo (unsupported) I had a good excuse to sit down and have a nice rest (of increasing duration as the day wore on) between laps, heck I even found time for a couple bacon and egg sambos between laps 4 and 6.. I can now inform everyone that there is no need to wonder why they don't have these at the feed stations on longer races like dirtworks... not a lot of fun burping up one of these puppies half way around the course Smiling

It was my first SRAM single track thingy and I'll definitely be back, nice track, well organized and friendly people, they even called me up to see how the leg was!

Pete B's picture

Good luck with the recovery. Hopefully see you at the next choc foot.

Wish I could get away with eating a sarnie or two between laps. I get a stitch even if I drink too much!
