M975 (XTR) or M775 (XT) brakes - thoughts?

I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket at the moment (not really) and I've come across a fairy good price on both M975 and M775 brakes.

These are going on a XC (single speed) project bike. Not massively fussed about weight. Looking for the 'better' brake (durability/adjustability etc).

From what I can tell the M975 has been superseded M985/M988.

Is the newer XT with 'servo wave' (whatever that is) better than the 'old' XTR? They look surprisingly similar to me.

I've got the older XT 765, the newer XT 775 and the XTR 975 brakes.

IMO the 765 isn't as powerful as the 775. The 775 has what feels like better modulation with the 775 calipers. The XTR levers with 775 calipers for some reason aren't as powerful, but modulation feels the same.

The 775 levers have a bit more adjustability with the lever reach and servo adjust in them. The XTR is very basic with adjustments in the name of saving weight.

If weight isn't your concern, def go the XT 775.

If you want gobsmacks of power later, you can simply buy a saint caliper and put that on. They are interchangeable as the Saint levers and the XT levers are identical save for colours and name.

If you can afford it, you should try and get the new XTR trail or race. They feel so good and strong! Smiling

I love the shimano brake sets, they are so simple and hassle free. Sinch to bleed and maintain.
