Sitting here, avoiding the heat, I've been wondering which xc trails get the most recommended on the nobmob site to visit next...

Ridden (ride regularly)
Glenrock
Ourimbah
Awaba
Kiwarrak (have to go back soon)

Next must do???
Manly Dam
The Oaks

not sure how the Oaks keeps getting on these lists. I suppose you can at least say you've done it just like every other sod with slightly wide tyres... It's good for training, but then so is riding up a highway.

I'll throw up
Wolgan valey railway/coach road.
mt Canobolas
Kingross
and most things at Nowra.

Sparrow Hill and Majura Pines are great XC trails - I want to go back

Also Wingello State Forest

also Yellomundi is fun.

visit Wingello

Menai gets my vote for the best trail if you love smashing yourself around technical single track.

If you prefer more of a good grind with some technical thrown in then check out Great North Rd at Wisemans Ferry.

Great North Road! It's the only reason to ride the Dirtworks (and Jacks Track = fun fun fun! Smiling :) Smiling )

If you ride out to Mogo Creek Rd and back via Shepherds 'Grinfest' Gully you'll get a nice 100km(ish) ride. The 575 just easts up the technical rocky drops and climbs. It LOVES IT!

South Sydney - Appin
West Sydney- Yellomundee
North Sydney - Ourimbah
East Sydney - Centennial Park (it's the only place to ride here!)
Illawarra - Nowra
South Coast - Mulbrooks Rd
ACT - Stromlo (cause Majura and Sparrow are pretty much gone)
VIC - Forrest, Mt Buller has potential
SA - Eagle Park
QLD - Gap Creek
OS - Colorado and Whistler

Doing soon
Thredbo this weekend
Glenrock and Awaba end of the month
Kiwarrak in June

Must Do NZ!!!

Direct flights mean you can leave Sydney in the morning and be riding the sweet Whakarewarewa Forest single track in the afternoon Smiling

Chica, I used to say that too, but ever since the Fat Tyre Festival last year, Awaba has now become my favourite Single Track - Well worth driving the extra km's further up the road.

Laughing out loud

@ phil - haven't ridden Awaba since they added all the new kms, probably 2 years ago. I was up there for the FTF as well but as a spectator/photographer and everyone raved about the track, so will have to wait till end of this month when we head up to the central coast for a mtb camping weekend (including Glenrock)

Have heard great things about Awaba. I bumped into Fankles at KOM2 and he was adamant that it should be on your list of trails to ride before you die.

@chica: when you and BF are ready for a trip up there, let me know. I've been up there a few times and can show you around, although I keep discovering new stuff. The locals are pretty keen to show off their trail network. There's a regular shop ride at 7am Saturdays if you're keen as well.

Tip: If you don't have a GPS, a compass is pretty important. Without a guide it could otherwise take you days to get out of there! There are so many trails Smiling

Here's the last ride I did up there as a joint reconnaissance mission with RobbieO. As you can see, there were a few "Nuh-uh. Wrong direction" moments. lol!

Oh, and I'd add Manly Dam, just so you can say you've done it. It has a bit of everything.

thanks Hawkeye, will let you know but will probably be when it gets a bit cooler. Have also read somewhere that Port Macquarie now have a purpose built urban MTB park or are in the midst of building it.

good tip also re the GPS for unfamiliar territory - we purchased a Garmin a few years back after an adventure in the Sunshine coast hinterland trailnetwork, let's just say that riding at night without lights is not fun, but we finally found the car and learnt a lesson.

Meant to say I've been to Kiwarrak a few times. Awaba is still on my to-do list.

Awaba left me a little hollow. Its great overall but it lacks bits which just make you go WOW!

Have to agree with Rob that Rotorua is THE place.. its just ridiculous how much good stuff is there.

If one is going a little further a field, I think You Yangs that is SW of Melbourne has some of the most interesting and best thought out technical XC trails I have seen.

Stromolo is also great, especially when you head out the back. Great descents but also some good climbs and really well thought out.

Seriously? Have you been spoilt riding some über tracks overseas?

Which Awaba did you ride? It's all good. Everything after the hill is a scream-fest!

craked's picture

I agree with Phil, Awaba is sensational lots of thrills! and close to Sydney Smiling

moggio's picture

I know I was surprised by Awaba not being as good as I thought it would be. Still I only have been there once and I am very much ready to be proved wrong. It is a really great track, but I guess I found it didn't live up to the very high expectations from all the talk about it. I do think the newer sections are better than the older stuff there, my impression was there was a lot learnt about finding better, or less conservative lines... I don't whether they are still buidling but any new kms are bound to be really good.

Should be there again in a few weeks so will check it out again.

I was at Awaba on the 30th Jan for the club round and when you have someone on your tail screaming "Wahoo" with your tyres breaking traction as you take the corners because your exhausted but still pushing hard, life couldn't be better Smiling

jef79m's picture

In order of how much i want to get back there.

Kiwarrak (oh yeah.)
Glenrock
Awaba
Manly Dam

Thats all i've ridden, but the guys at Kiwarrak really know how to build a trail. They are so well built they make it easy for even unco guys like me.

hawkeye's picture

You can't possibly be more unco than me. Sticking out tongue

Lach's picture

for a bit of variety in the riding how about:

OGNR - Wiseman's Ferry
Old Coach Rd / Rail line into Newnes and back
Corn Trail from Clyde Mtn to Nellingen

All epic, scenic and historic.

If you happen to be in the area...
There are some great Single Tracks going up, down, around Mt Wellington - ask the LBS - they often do the usual "shop" rides. They are also working on a joint council plan to make an epic MTB trail from Mt Wellington, thru some Nat Parks, all the way out of town! Maybe we could send some of our council members for a looksie...

Kiwarrak is fantastic! Now imagine that with epic scenery and elevation - thats Queenstown!! Purpose built, amazing structures and spans, small jumps, huge jumps or just take all the B lines (Gondola Track, 7 mile track and bucket loads more - hey why not just take the helicopter to maybe that hill over there....) To put it into perspective imagine taking the bike from Jonahs Cafe at the top of Whale Beach and zig zag down to the beach - But multiply it by 10!

Perth is relatively flat - until you get up into the escarpment - great trails around Mundaring, Jarrahdale and Pinjarra. There's also the rather long trail 500kmish Munda Bindi. Cant say ive done that one but maybe one day.

Thanks for all the comments, great info to plan the next rides. So many good trails....

Glenrock I ride weekly and it's fantastic with a fair bit of work done in past couple of months on the trails too.
Awaba has some good sections and is great to race on.
Ourimbah is heaps of fun, you can't beat flying down the roller coaster, over the magic carpet and winding through the trees of the graveyard, the best way to spend an afternoon.

I rode around Kiwarrak for a couple of hours over the holidays with a map, a huge goanna and a spider in my helmet, next time have to make sure I link the trails up better, can't wait to get back. This weekend trying the trails of Port Macquarie.

2011 - Canberra, Thredbo and more of the surrounds of Sydney and back to Kiwarrak!
2012 - Rotoura (& maybe woodside mtb park near Aukland) or Lake Wanaka and Queenstown or Mt Buller.
2013 - BC & hopefully a sacred ride
Thanks again
Muz.
