Ay Up Upgrades

Just in case you're not aware, Ay Up are upgrading existing light sets (100 customers a week). Sent mine off a week ago and they were returned yesterday with new LEDs, upgraded resistors and new all-round lenses. I'm not totally sure of the output but it must be around 1200 lumens for the double set. So far only had a play in the garden but very impressed with the brightness and spread of light. In fact, I would seriously wonder why you would need anything brighter for night time riding.

Cost?

Did you get the new white Saxon cap too?

I haven't heard of this upgrade. Is it additional cost or simply good customer service?

I am guessing that if I only purchased mine last year that there isn't much point upgrading at this stage?

Didn't spot the new saxon cap - perhaps next time.

They say the upgrade is at cost which I guess covers labour costs as well. I think the price is about right to make it worthwhile if you've got a model from a couple of years ago and really want to give them a new lease of life.

If you only bought them a year ago then the upgrade is more questionable. You most probably wouldn't want to upgrade the LED and just go for the extra power + new lenses which will give you an extra 50% output. For 70 to 80 bucks for doing a double set then it's most probably borderline in terms of value.

What the battery life will drop down to with the extra power?

6 hours drops to 4 hours on normal power. The low power option is equivalent to pre-upgrade and so lasts 6 hours again. Of course you'll halve these figures for the smaller battery.

I've got a set of intermediate & narrow from a few years ago. (the generation after Luxeons)
They were so woefully dim compared to my 700 lumen Pygmy that I've been running, that I've been running both sets on my bars with the Pygmy on my helmet.
Or for road commuting, one set was just enough, or two if I wanted to go out to Bobbo or Akuna for a night training session.
It was a real shame because Ayup still set the standard for simplicity and bulletproof design.

the upgrade looks good value, so I've gone for the new LEDs and extra power, so should be in for double the light. I added an epic battery to add to my collection of 1 x 3 and 1 x 6hr, so will be able to run a pair for a comfortable 4 hrs. The 3 hr battery will be good for 2 hrs now, so good for a lightweight commuting setup with a single light. I'll report back later with a comparison with the HID Tech Pygmy (which is an awesome helmet light btw). All up cost with new battery and postage: $200

Anyone got them back yet?
Any reports?

I've bought a pair of the white saxon caps, and first impression is WoW! These are incredibly bright. Full 180deg white light.
These are going to be fantastic at The Mont next month.

5 stars from me.

Please note that AY UP reset the counter for their upgrade orders each Monday morning, so you will have to be quick.
The limit is 100 upgrades per week and I was too slow last Monday, so now I have to wait until first thing this Monday morning.

If you check out the Saxon Cap information page ( http://www.ayup-lights.com/products/37/ ), you'll see that they are shown in red, white and blue colours.
They must have been intending to sell blue Saxon Caps and have changed their mind (or maybe they are a Police special order only?) .

Wouldn't it be a great way to slow down the speeding traffic in your street with a couple of sets of recently upgraded lights with flashing red and blue Saxons!

On the countdown to Monday.
