I need advice as to what part or parts I need to buy?
Went for a mud run today, and broke something inside the front derailleur shift lever.
It must have been gummed up and I pushed it too hard, indicator needle stepped out too, not sure what I did but I had to ride home 1x9.
Pulled it apart and the little white plastic ring that engages the end of the shift cable has snapped out its fitting.
Need at least a new white ring. Can I buy this? OR do I have to buy a whole shifter?
I am assuming nothing else broke to cause this, and that I can get the 12 or so parts back together.
Advice please?

Go to a bike shop. www.komcyclery.com.au
I'm not entirely sure what part your referring too, if you could put up a picture that would be helpful. Either way i doubt you can get shifter internals through retail avenues at a price that justifies the effort, you may however be able to pick up a secondhand / new bottom of the line shimano shifter that you can pinch the part from (often internal brackets/clips/screws are generic and standard across the range).
You may even find a friendly forum reader with a spare old shifter laying around that you can trade for a beer or two
Very unhelpful advice given the website has no parts.....I will take a picture of the parts and upload soon.
My brief web search points to me buying a pair of shifters online for at least $65 or more.
Take the opportunity to upgrade.
I'd recommend these instead.

Hope this isn't unhelpful.
will have a look in my box of goodies, i take it, it was the front shifter that crapped out, sure i have 1 or 2 of them here somewhere
It is a SL-M530 shifter.....does anyone know how compatible these things are i.e. can I use the white ring from a M590 etc.
Not economically worthwhile to fix, especially at that end of the market.
Shimano does not list shifter internal parts separately and provide no detail of the shifter internals parts except for the entire mechanism as a single unit in their publicly available tech docs. See here:

If they break, toss 'em and upgrade. Take a look at wiggle.co.uk - their prices are competitive with CRC and they have a low free freight threshhold.
The Gods of MTB must be smiling on me. Just bought a pair of the exact same shifters on ebay for under $40 delivered.

Lucky me! Thanks for the advice guys.
