Mt York - Saturday 7 May circa 1pm?
NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.
Hi all
I'm planning to ride Mt York this coming Saturday at about 1pm (down Coxs, up Lawson).
I haven't ridden it before, so would really like to find someone(s) who has and ride with them. Either way, I'll be taking it pretty slow (slower if I'm by myself, I guess).
Any interest?
Regards
Daniel

If you've not ridden Lockyer's before, than I recommend that one over Lawson's any day. The options I would think about are:
a) Down Cox's, up Lockyer's
b) Down then up Lockyer's
c) Up Berghoffer's, then either a or b, then down Berghoffer's back to the car
I might be interested, but I won't know for sure until the end of the week.
Ok - I got the impression from Trailflix and NobMob that Lockyer's up was hard yakka, but happy to follow advice (that's why I'm here!).
With ya Jim,
i would go c then b!
BTW, leaving at 1pm will want to make sure you dont get benighted!
...I don't want to get caught in the dark.
I was only planning one run down then one up. Is that cutting it too fine?
If you go up berghoffers and then down and up lockyers or cox's, it would be kind of cutting it fine, it would depend on nothing going wrong, and with the amount of rocks and sticks there is every chance that there would be punctures etc, i think it is running it a bit fine, i think going a bit earlier would be wisest, and also having someone with you on this one who has been there, there are plenty of chances to take a wrong turn!
Also seem to be lots of snakes about at the moment as well, but it is well worth the ride, the lockyers run is awesome!
Thanks for the advice.
I guess if I can't find someone who knows it to ride with, I'll leave exploring it on my own til another day when I can get there in the morning.
Its a shame a lot of us are doing remedial work on a track, otherwise we would have said yes, mt york is a great day out, one of the classic rides!
Post up again in the future and i'm sure you will get some guides to take you round!
I might be keen, but would have to be a late starter. So if I get a leave pass might be able to catch up with you somewhere
Full up Berg, down Lock, up law, down Berg generally takes us 2-2.5hrs pushing reasonably quick. I would imagine starting at 1 wouldn't leave you in the dark unless you have trouble. Still it's a very awesome night ride.
That is my favourite circuit, so much fun, also a stop in at the comet is good too!!!
I'd love to do it soon but the next 2 Saturdays are out 4 me, one tip is only ever go down coxs rd as there's a lot of walking going up.
John
If so, I'm happy to be your guide.
A down-Lockyer's, up-Lawson's usually takes me an hour, if I don't stop.
When there are other riders and we stop to gasbag, take happy snaps, do endos, fix flats, etc, I'd double it to be safe. Sunset at 17:15, last light at 17:40, we should have buckets of time.
Meet you at the Berghoffer's / Lawson's track head on Mt York Rd around 1PM?
That's awesome! Yes, I'm still on for it. Meet you there at 1pm. Will PM you my mobile number and maybe you can do the same?
Thanks again.
That is an absolutely brilliant ride.
Huge thanks, Jim. Was great to meet you and ride the trail with a local.
Sorry I had to clear out so quickly - train timetable isn't very forgiving. Will definitely be up that way again and would be great to shout you a beer or two.
I also have unfinished business with that series of roll-downs...
So you rode the chute down Lockyers!!!!
Do you do the chute Todd? I can't remember.
The one besides the stairs? It's not so bad now the log drop isn't in it....
Bloodpuddle was referring to the section about half-way in, where there is a series of rocky roll-downs between two trees that leads down into a short, fast dirt and root section with a small cliff rising above you on the right. I think Todd calls this the chute.
Well, I coaxed and wheedled, and even put the camera away, but Bloodpuddle belied his name and decided to leave himself a little challenge for next time. Maybe if I'd tried shame and ridicule I might have seen some of that claret that he advertises, but not that day, alas.
As for the stairs bypass, my opinion on this matter (and it's just my opinion) is that this should only be ridden by someone with skill who can avoid locking the brakes and causing more erosion than what is already there.
That's not me, so I carry down the stairs.
That was the good thing about the log drop when it was there, it made you get off the brakes, caught the sediment and broke the rut. But it was scary on a xc bike.
On the other one momentum is your friend right up til it king hits you with a baseball bat...
knowing when to brake and when to let it roll (especially on the front) is the key
Yeah Mark, i love that rocky step/chute section, the other one will try soon, but the run out is a bit of a problem, just love that whole ride!
We should organise a ride there in a few weeks during the day... I usually like down and up Lockyers as its good in reverse once your above the steps. Either way great ride... haven't done it for ages.
Geez! Yeah, ok I chickened out. Have been replaying those roll-downs in my head. Every time they get a bit less steep and I get a little more skillful. Next time I'm riding them. Either that or living up to my name...
Want me to put it up?..say up berghoffers, down lockyers, then up lockyers?..or do you want to go the whole hog and ride to lawsons?
I can't do it for at least 5 weeks I'd say. Things too crazy in my life at the moment.
I'd say Berghoffers, Lockyers, Lockyers, Berghoffers.
Lockyers is good up and definately worth the slight technical climb aspect along the ridge in reverse. I'd say its more fun than Lawsons where the only good bit is the single track which is fun but relatively short.
OK i will ring you and set a time, i thought the out and back of this was sooooo much fun, lockyers in reverse is great fun!
