Awaba race advice
Hey guys, I'm pretty keen to start racing and someone recommended i try the xc race at awaba this sunday, can anyone give me some advice on what grade to enter? I'm pretty comfortable around the 20km mark distance wise but that's just at cruising pace, i imagine at race speed that will be significantly shortened. I don't really want to bite off more than i can chew, but at the same time there is no honor in thrashing children and grannies LOL . Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Depends if you want to "race" or ride three laps quickly. I reckon 2 hours cruising is worth 1 hour xc. Im a terrible xc racer. I enjoy it but by trying to race 3 laps of yellowmunide in C grade I absoulutely kill myself where as ill ride the 4 hour series solo and finnish top 15 most races. Xc racing you are pretty much on your rev limit for the whole time. My advice would be go D if you want to race ie look for a place, follow attacks, chase wheels etc and see how you go. If you win then your in the wrong grade and if you don't you'll enjoy trying to catch the faster blokes for the rest of the season.
solid advice mate, greatly appreciated. I think D grade sounds like it might be the go, really keen to give it a crack.
hey dutchy ,I reckon D grade is the right spot to start, you want it to be enjoyable and not a painful experience. BTW there are no creek crossings at Awaba
Damn, i was really looking forward to the swim leg. Still covered in bruises from last weekend
Enjoy.Club racing is a lot of fun. There is a lot of emphasis on the big races in the MTB community and i love the atmoshphere of those races but club racing has its own unique atmoshpere. The familiar faces the rivalries etc and for the price its hard to beat.
My 2 cents worth. Awaba is an awesome single track. It really depends on what sort of riding you are used to. There is a nasty hill halfway and lot's of fantastic tight single track. Ourimbah is similar. My first race last year was a Chocfoot event at Nowra, Condoo road. That was awesome and a fantastic intro to racing, not too difficult, flowy and not overly hilly. Benefit of all trails mentioned, they are circuits. So if you do a lap and get fragged, you can stop and chillax a bit. I agree club racing is fabulous and price wise perfect, get on it.
The best value add I can give you, is..............just get out and ride. Lord know's I need a heap more. Have fun.
Its even more fun when theres a race on. It helps gauge how you went when theres others there.
Next race at awaba is 22nd May.
Next race at Awaba is tomorrow 08/05/11
went around the red loop at awaba this morning to scope the place out, will definitely be going back in the morning to race in d grade. Thanks for all your advice and support guys, really appreciated.
hey guys, just thought i'd let you know that the race went well, not sure where i placed, but i'm pretty sure it was in the top 3 for D grade, anyone know when the race results will get posted on the HMBA website? Pretty keen to find out how i did, lap times etc. Can't wait for the next round, think i might step it up to C grade. Thanks again for all help
