The NSW All Schools XC MTB will still be on at YRP this weekend. There was not huge amounts of rain out there ealry in the week, and with Friday and Saturday being fine, then racing on Sunday should be GREAT!
So I'm bringing my youngster and a few others
I was out at Y'mundee yesterday guiding a group of school girls around the course. It was great to see so many young females out there riding and giving the racing scene a crack. Some of the girls were pretty fresh to MTB but it was so rewarding to see the change in their confidence from when we started to when we returned back to their parents in the carpark. We practised a few of the tricky sections of the track and the girls were pretty proud of themselves when they mastered a couple of rock roll downs and drops into the creek crossings. Wish I had started riding at their age!
I'm sure they will all have an awesome time out there today - Yellomundee was in excellent condition yesterday, lucky kids!
Great job also to WSMTBC for hosting this event, the guys do put a lot of their own time into running this event.
Good on you chica. I saw quite a few girls on the course, including some that looked ... um, tiny It was great to see them out on the track with their race faces on giving it a go. All of the girls I saw looked confident and relaxed, and like they were thoroughly enjoying themselves. Well done if you had a hand in that.
To keep spectators and racers' siblings amused, the MC put on a few activities, including bike limbo and a "slow race", where the point was to be the last across the line in a 25m race, *without* putting your foot down, and without track standing.
It was won by a guy with obvious skills on a skate park bike, but second by less than a wheel's length was an 11yo girl - dressed in lots of pink - who stunned the MC and the rest of us watching with her bike control. The poor little thing wasn't quite sure what to make of the fuss being made of her, but hopefully she enjoyed her well-earned prize schwag.
Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, my son's school didn't field a team, but through some contacts Marist College North Sydney kindly let him race in one of their two Intermediate teams, and he had a brilliant time. After the event finished, the first thing he did was place his order: "Dad. We're doing this next year."
How lucky are these kids to have this sort of event and on the only dry track in Sydney! It's great to see so many of them out there having a crack.
Not sure if your son races normally Hawkeye but at the WSMTBC XC rounds they put on junior races before the adults, and I think the under 15/17s race the same time & course as the adults. good prep for next year.
Thanks all for the positive feedback.
We had over 170 kids from 25 schools compete at the NSW All Schools XC MTB on Sunday. It was a four hour teams race - with 3 age divsions, and male/female/mixed categories in each div. Beautiful weather, great track - what could be better for kids to be doing!!
Many thank to all the WSMTB helpers, JetBlack, Blackmans, Mountain Biking Aust mag.
See you all next year.
