Looking for a Giant Reign 1 for under $1k?
I'm pretty sure about once a month a forum thread goes along the lines of "... I'm think about buying a bike, should I ..." followed by followed by the original poster then saying "I can't afford a $2k/$3k/$4k etc bike"
Looks like someone has you in mind, with an apparently 'brand new' Giant Reign 1 going for under $1k on Gumtree: http://nsw.gumtree.com.au/c-Stuff-for-Sale-sport...
Personally I think it's a bit dodge (too cheap - if there is such a concept), and enough of us have had bikes stolen (myself included) to question something like this. Anyhow, (if it is legal) this is the best deal I've seen on Gumtree in, well, quite a while.

looking at the pic, its about 3-4 years old I think.
Have a look on the forums at rotorburn.com. There seems to always be heaps of good quality second hand bikes.
I have no idea what year the bike is - my guess if they have just found a picture of the internet and used that, not that it is necessarily accurate...
Agreed re second hand bikes, this ad claims for the bike to be brand new (even if it is a few years old) - I haven't seen something like this come up before (at this price).

The pic is of a Reign 3, its about 4 years old, I used to have that same model and spec as that advertised back in NZ.
Good bike, last of the good looking frames before they went all blah and curvy.
##### MY BAD, I WAS SURE MINE WAS A 3 AS IT ONLY HAD JUICY 3'S AND THAT WAS ENTRY LEVEL FOR A GIANT IN NZ AND IT WAS THE CHEAPER OF THE RANGE...OOPS ####
I sold the same bike on e bay a few weeks ago it is a reign 1 2007.I sold it for $1300.00. www2.giant-bicycles.com/en-AU/bikes/mountain/656/22672/?collections_id=2
You can copy the above web address this is the Giant achieve for 2007 it will take you to this bike.
Let me tell you about this bike.
Based on the photo, it's a 2007 Reign 1. At the time, here in Australia, there was a Reign 0 (better spec and different colour) and the Reign 1. The 1 hit the shops at RRP $2899. That's a stock photo. Why the seller couldn't use an actual photo is anyones guess.
I can't see in the ad any claim that it's new, just that it's in flawless condition. In any case, $850 is a fair price for such a bike in good, excellent or flawless condition. Less if it's rooted or any parts are up for replacement. Typically, I find people don't keep up with suspension servicing so a four year old bike may have tired suspension. Otherwise, this is a bargain. I had this model from new, purchased from where I now work, and had it for two and half years. Me being me it became very customised. It was an awesome bike.
The Reign is the best all round bike Giant make. With careful set up it can be many things to many people.
Don't let the fact that the seller cannot spell the brand name correctly trouble you. I find most people in internet land can't spell/proof read. It doesn't mean the bike/deal isn't genuine. All the usual checks should be carried out, though.
I suggested "new" as the seller states "unwanted gift" - how many people give second hand mountain bikes as gifts (to people who clearly don't want to ride)?
To be clear, I have no interest in this bike, I'm not seeking 'advice' on the sale, I'm just posting this for others who are in the market.
Having looked at enough classifieds I doubt the veracity of the claims when (i) a real picture is not used and (ii) the details are not clear/ spelt wrong. Maybe I'm a bit harsh. As always, buyer beware...
I ran into the lack of servicing on suspension issue you mentioned with my last second hand frame purchase, what seemed like a bargain at $300 (it was) was still good value with the $200 service, I just wasn't expecting that.
