Fox RP23 Sag Setting

Hi,

I have just picked up an Anthem X1 29er (the most farkin ugly bike on the planet). The RP23 is 100mm and my understanding is that the sag must be 25mm, but to get to that amount of sag I have to drop the pressure in the shock to about 57psi which seems low to me. I am about 64kg.

Cheers
Ian

25% sag seems heaps!-maybe just go for a ride & adjust as you go.

25% is about where you need to be. 15 - 30 is the range people work with. Your setting depends on your riding style, the suspension type etc etc etc. No point running it too stiff when you have a pro pedal lever as you can run nice compliant suspension for the bumps then engage pro pedal for the smooth and climbs. Best of both worlds!

Make sure you have your pro pedal off when you set the sag. It sounds to me like you've set it up with the pro pedal on which is why you can't get sag even with bugger all air in the chamber.

The bike shop staff should have done this with you! I guess this is the result of receiving a discount....
Know this; 25% is the Giant recommendation for Maestro bikes of this category. Stick to it within only 2%. The percentage is of shock stroke not available travel. That shock has 38mm of stroke so work out this figure and then use your vernier calipers (which I trust you do own) to measure.
Do your fork too. Same logic applies. A fork isn't subject to a linkage so the stroke is the same as available travel. Measure fork sag by moving the o ring to the seal, getting on board gently and rolling forward a few metres while standing. No Brakes!
Remember; Pro pedal off on rear. Compression dial turned to fully fast, lock out blow off threshhold dial to fully open on fork, rebound to fully fast on both. When sag is set, then get your settings right.
It's not about psi. It's all about mm of sag. Never forget this. By all means record the air pressures to remind oneself but those pressures will vary throughout the year.
And there's uglier bikes out there I can promise you!

....and to be clear, the pro pedal is off. I was doing 100mm x 25% = 25mm of sag, and not the 38mm x 25% = 9.8mm, so a big difference.I did not know that, and certaintly did not see anything saying that on the Fox website!!

Thanks again.

Before you spend too much time adjusting things - get a little oil down around the top seals. They may be dry and causing a lot of stiction which will make all the other set up efforts futile.

Got caught out with this little problem on my new Felt Virtue. Wasted a month fiddling around with it till I put a drop of oil under the lips of each seal and viola! My horrible jerky Recons instantly became plush.
