tubeless tyres

i have bought a new bike a few months ago with tubeless rims. i fitted tubes as advised and am happy with them. the only downside seems to be that the range of tyres and price if i were to look for medium compound tyres 26 x 2.15 what would you suggest?

on a ust rim but it may not seat properly. This would be noticeable on the road but not on the dirt. I have been told to inflate the tyre to about 60psi and then drop it back down to the pressure you want to run it on.

FWIW I am running LArsen LUST on my non ust rims at the moment because I wanted the extra sidewall protection. There is a slight "bob" in one spot on the rear tyre which is only visible to the eye, I can't feel it on either the road or the bush.

Most people tend to use the Maxxis range. The Crossmarks, Ignitors and Larsens seem to be the most popular. Very much a personal thing. I run an Ignitor front with Larsen rear. A couple of people I know run the Crossmarks for both front and rear. Usually the 26 x 2.10.
One suggestion is to use a slightly softer compound tyre on the front, for that little extra grip.

My suggestion is just play with the combinations until you are happy with the setup.

I've been running Larsen front Crossmark rear. I thought the Crossmark wouldn't offer enough grip for a front... I have been very surprised at the cornering grip offered by the Crossmark, even more than the larsen. Only down side was in thick muddy conditions they don't have a lot of climbing grip.

Next I think I'll go Crossmark front an back in the dry, Larsen on the rear in the wet.

The new Mitchelin tyres look good too but I haven't played with them yet.

The Rush I'm now riding came with Crossmark USTs front + rear.

When I first looked at them I was thinking they looked none too grippy and I'd be taking 'em off pretty soon. However, they've proved quiet capable. I'm 80Kg and have been running only around 35PSI recently. The only challenging climb at Terrey Hills isn't a real challenge, but in the wet where grip is a real issue it's been known to catch even the best out. I was quiet impressed first time up there on these Crossmarks - wet and with loose rocks, not a problem.

And as those who witnessed my little mishap on Saturday will attest, they can corner incredibly sharply at quiet some speed. I doubt I'll ever ask them to turn in even twice the radius at that speed again, it's amazing what your equipment is capable of when needed!

Another vote for Crossmarks as an all around tyre. In general I've found Maxxis tyres easier to mount and get the bead seated than other brands I've used (Kenda & Michelin).

If you're just up for XC then ignore this but I like a bit more freeride/techy stuff and if that's your bag then you might try a 2.3 on the front and a 2.1 on the rear.

You can't go wrong with Maxxis, I like high rollers for the rear and Minions for the front, or you might go an Ignitor or Conti Vert Pro for a smaller grippy front. A mate of mine swears by Larsens on the rear too, though I've experienced their sidewalls of cheese...

You can't beat hands on experience so experiment a bit, tyres don't last that long and you'll never know what you're missing till you try it.

I thought that the specialized fast track tyres I was using were great, the only down side was the very soft side walls, after ripping the side wall out of one, John(Carlgroover) got me going on a brand new crossmark. The crossmarks ride just as nice but with a little more protection on the side, for me they are my only xc choice now.

As far as XC and UST goes, these tires are sweet! Minimal rolling resistance, have enough grip to climb most things and the Sauser touch in terms of design...

Yep they can have thin sidewalls which is why I recommend running the tubeless version even if you are running standard rims and tube. They might be a little heavier but the thicker sidewalls are more resistance to tearing out.

I'm sure Sam hill ran over sized larsens front and back at See Otter DH a few years back

Are the walls lighter than Larsens as my son and I have never damaged a Larsen sidewall, I own some crossmarks but due to a tire buying obsession I haven't tried them yet.
Also does any one find Larsens throw sand in your eyes when they're on the front and do crossmarks do this also?

It depends which Larsons TTs you are talking about, the Exceptions have very thin side walls and are the ones most people have toruble with (but they're really a light race tyre anyway). The tyres Flynny mentioned Sam Hill using on the other hand have DH casing and are very strong. I haven't seen these around in Oz for a while though

I have got Larsen TT Exceptions on my non-tubeless wheels. And my riding style isn't the smoothest around (I have hit my rear wheel on a few obstacles when trying to negotiate a tight section)

with all this talk of Crossmarks and the fact that my Hutchisons on the rear of the anthem are nearly warn out after only 350-400kms i have ordered a set of crossmarks (hopefully will arrive before the 8hr next weekend)
Now do i leave the hutchison (piranha or something) on the front and put the crossmark on the back or other way around or crossmarks front and back, bit of trial and error coming up i think

P.S. larsens do spit up sand on the face, i have them on my spare bike, TIP: always wear sunglasses and keep your mouth closed

Good tip that, I remember tearing down the shute at the Sydney 24 with stuff flinging off the wheels a couple of years ago thinking - "hmm that doesnt taste like mud"

Though I haven't done much riding between then and this year ...

I was advised at bike addiction an ignitor up front and my existing larsen on the rear. But with all the reccomendations, the ebay Crossmarks for $66 a pair on ebay looked good. But a Leximack bought them as I was still umming. Lucky the blokes got 2 sets! So just bought a set myself.

Torpedo7 used to have them at $39 each i think and occasional had specials on them for under $30, but they dont sell them anymore.
So i thought for $65 including delivery for the crossmarks it was a good deal

I'll be hard pressed to think of any farm animals venturing anywhere near the chute ...

i think its only ever been at Dargle, the finishing shute which is a pretty fast downhill run into a paddock is where you would expect cows to be when theres not a couple of hundred mountain bikers there, so you dont have to guess too hard at what was flicking up into alchemists mouth

for some reason or other I was thinking of the top and middle parts of the chute. It slipped my mind that there would be a bottom part of the chute ...

thanks to all i think i will go with the crossmarks the next question is will they be easy or hard to fit on the rims i have taken off the tubeless tyres and they were a nightmare to refit

Depends on the rims. Some tyre/rim combinations are a bitch. I can get the Crossmarks on and off my crossmax with out tools.

It depends on a few things i.e. rims; batch of tyres, experience etc.

I have Crossmarks 2.1 on a Crossmax SL wheelset and it's not that much more difficult than a std 2.1 non-UST tyre...

my wheel sets are Bontrager Race Lite do you know if the crossmarks 2.1 will be any problems as the tyre set i have is Bontrager Super X, tubeless, 26x2.1" when i fitted tubes it took me about 15 mins to refit each tyre i do not want to do this to often
