Well a mate of mine (newbie) and I did Little Moab, Road to nowhere, XC loop, where Mildred joined us and continued on to Moon rocks, Power lines and Nursery rhymes for what was a perfect days riding. We then decided to do one more lap of the XC loop.
Started the loop and noticed 2 choppers circling the area, wanting to see what was happening we took the Little Moab turn off to reach the top of the hill. It was there that we came across 2 mtb'ers giving CPR to a collapsed walker and another mtb'er trying to wave down one of the choppers. With the 3 of us not knowing CPR, we helped wave down the NRMA Careflight chopper onto the rock ridge top while the other guys continued with the CPR until till the paramedics reached them and took over. Sadley after well over 40 minutes of CPR and medical attention the walker had passed away. We then assisted the police to the site and then left
being nothing else we could do.
The guys who did the CPR did a heroic job and the Careflight paramedics were fantastic.
Some thoughts; people and bikes in the bush are very hard to see from the air so something
reflective or white ie space blanket or t-shirt waved about in an open area helps.
Always let some one know where you are going and carry some ID on you. Carry some form of First Aid kit with you, you never know when you may need it. Do a first aid course if you can
you won't feel so helpless if the need arises.
Life's short.
A disposable face mask.
I have had the unfortunate task of performing CPR more than once and it is not a pleasant experience either emotionally or from a physical stand point. Its a sad fact of life in todays society that we need to protect ourselves as much as possible and its from this point of view that I say go and buy yourself a disposable resus mask from your local chemist. They are cheap, about the size of one of those other things alot of young people tend to carry in their wallets and may one day save your life as well as that of the person you use it on.
Absolute bummer of a way to end what should have been a perfect day on the trail. If its any consolation, and I'm sure it probably won't be, I have been told that 9 out of 10 people who need CPR don't survive. I'm sure all involved did everything humanly possible.
Take care all.
