BMX Lumber-jacks
yesterday while walking my local trails with my dog ,on a section of single track I came across an area wear local kids have been building BMX jumps this does not worry me except that along with this they had hacked down about 13 gum trees indescriminately some of these trees would have been 60 foot high ,the place is a mess ,combined with heaps of litter laying everywhere ,I can't believe the mentality of these people (or lack of) I called the local ranger who is going to go there and have a look at this vandalism but it is unlikely that these people will be found unless caught in the act,I also told the ranger that I am an MTBer who loves to ride in this area and that we care about the bush.Unfortunatly being associated bike jumps doesn't do much for cycling in this area.

and talk to the builders?
remember how fun building bmx jumps when u where a kid was...what they are doing is great for young people, however chopping down trees and leaving a mess is not good, and they must be educated.
yeah if I knew who they were I would try to talk to them and and pass on some information ,I would be reluctant to approach them while they are yielding axes though.I am all for the building of jumps and berms I even ride some of their handy work It's the vandalism of the place that needs to be stopped.
... along the lines of "Trail users please contact me urgently on this number if you want to keep this site!" That way you can be on their side.
With the loss of the trails on the ANSTO land because of complaints of environmental vandalism, this might be an opportunity to get these guys to "fess up" and apologise, and start working with land managers to not only address the situation but get these trails approved.
What's done is done... laying blame and beating them up will no doubt make us all feel better, BUT the focus needs to be on doing what is required to limit the consequences and keep trails access.
Unfortunately, I think if we are fortunate enough to get access to these trails again it will likely be under strict conditions and control. Unauthorised trail works would probably result in automatic closure again.
I don't see any point in finding these guys we need to move forward and ensure the whole MTB community understands it is not kosher and jeopardises access like we have seen. The removal of the see-saw should have been seen as an indication something like this was going to happen.
I doubt these guys will ever be part of the MTB community, once they are old enough to get licences to drive it's unlikely they would ever ride bicycles again ,more likely to rip the place up on moto's!
there is no hope then!
I would love to know where its proven that all dirt jumpers will most likely become destructive moto riders, and that all Dj riders are kids.
Also its supprising what age groups partake in DJ, try 10-40yo+
lets keep it possitive guys and try to work together for the benifit of all bikers.
.. generally speaking. Give up on this and the results are guaranteed...
The only qualification is that you need to pick your battles. So... is this area worth fighting for, for legalised access?
