Menai - again
Not sure if this has already been covered but I just found this article and was wondering if it had anything to do with the recent closure....

I think the 500hectare recreation zone they are looking at was raised in the meeting they had last week.
... for thinking that the people who have in the past tolerated a nuclear reactor, a garbage dump and trail bikes for the last 30 years, would suddenly care about trail erosion and a few dirt jumps....
bye bye menai trails, welcome suburbia!
I am starting to believe that the world hates mountain bikers more than any other sports people, it is insane. Every where there has been forests flattened to put in cricket pitches, soccer fields, swimming pools etc, but dare to have a little mountain bike track XC/freeride or DH and it seems to be the worst thing you can do. Menai - Heathcote for example has been trashed by dirt bikes and 4WD for 20 plus years, but they shut the MTB tracks. hypocrisy!!!!
This is not directly related to the Menai closure which is to do with the reactor buffer zone and ANTSO.
This is however an important consideration in resolving the wider issues of trail access to this area as trails cross in and out of the reactor buffer and into GLALC's land.
This development proposal has been going on for a long time, currently GLALC are responding to the previous State Governments request for a lot more information from GLALC. This is not to decide if it can go ahead, rather to decide if it can be considered as a State Significant Site. If so it may bypass Sutherland Shire Council and go to the State for approvals. Council so far on public record has not been supportive.
Expectations are that it may soon go on public exhibition for comment. The recent PR releases such as posted here likely mean this is coming up. We may well need some constructive comment regarding this project to the Department of Planning when this goes on exhibition. I will post details when we know more.
The project in itself may not be all bad for mountain biking, it could even be good if we can get legitimate trails included. This is a subject that following the first ANSTO meeting we are hoping to discuss with GLALC whom were also at the meeting.
Under GLALC's current proposal lodged at the Department of Planning 40% of the land will be set aside as a conversation precinct. 40% in this case is a largish area comprising of 380 Ha. This is roughly the size of the strip of land with the main trails from ANTSO to and just beyond the FR area.
