Hey Guys, Im new on the forum, you guys have some pretty awesome stuff.

Ive been tossing up between the Scott Scale 80 and an Avanti Aggressor 1 for my entry level mtb. They both have similar specs, although the Aggressor comes with clipless pedals and a Rock Shox Tora. That said, it is also $50 more expensive at the moment. The Scott is a good deal lighter than the Avanti at 12.6kg, but with more mediocre parts.

Clipless pedals are not essential for me (i prefer platform clipless), so i will probably replace them at some stage.

I will take them both for a test ride soon, but what would you guys choose? Ive put the links to both bikes below.

Cheers.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, have you considered this:-

Again similar specs but $200 cheaper. I have one and can't fault it. Also the LBS I got it from (inner city cycles) gave excellent dealer service before and after the sale which always makes the bike buying experience more enjoyable.

For $800 you can get Rockshox Dart and XT shadow RD at 12.9 kg

too many choices

Check out TBSM's website and maybe give them a call to see what they can do at your price. They often have fantastic sales and are great to deal with,

Here's an example. A Focus Black Forest 4.0. Focus are not that common here but I think get good reviews and are big in europe. This one has a great spec for the price. You're looking at XT/SLX drivetrain and a recon fork instead of SLX / Alivio and a Tora:

No worries re TBSM I don't have any affiliation with them it's just that they do have great deals from time to time. My mates and I have bought quite a few bikes through them now and been very happy but of course everyone's experience is different.

Hey all, just to add, both these bikes (scott and avanti) are on sale. The scott is priced at $800 and the avanti $850.

Was really happy with it and still ride it occasionally. It had Tora's and was good enough for me to do quite a few races and get reasonable results. Hope that helps.

I have an Avanti road bike and I know that's very different to an mtb but I can definitely vouch for the build quality as it's been a really great bike. Just a thought bit if you're happy to pay around $1,200 have you had a look at bikes that are slightly more expensive than that? With 2012 models coming out from about September onwards there are great deals on 2011 models which is probably why both those are now on sale. You might even be able to go a step up from what you have been looking at and stay within your budget. That's what I am kind of finding with my current search.

Thanks for the ideas guys, will definitely keep in mind.

Cheers
