My first Awaba Hotlap. Turned out to be an expensive one.

Date:
10 Sep 11
Challenge:
Awaba State Forest - Red Loop
Time:
00:39:40 Second Lap. Pushed much harder this time as had a bike shop rider behind me... Did my best superman for some time after JUST clipping a tree. No damage to me... As for the bike... different story. Still managed sub 40 though. This is a great track for Hot Laps - pity its so far away for us N.Beaches guys...

Spill the beans
Great to see some times being posted
Was trying to keep it quiet owing to my rep of braking things... My shoulder clipped a small tree, resulting in a VERY load "crack" Loud enough to be heard from the guy 50 metres behind me... Wasnt me that cracked, wasnt the tree either.... Massive tear on the top tube... Didnt see it till i got home and cleaned up the bike, saw the ripple under my frame skin and was like WTF!, Followed by Oh No!!! Followed by an instant migraine! (May have been a tear shed, but im blaming hayfever) Didnt really need the bike shop to tell me the frame was terminal.
I really love my "dale's, so a replacement is on the way... : )
... with my propensity for hitting things, aluminium sounds good
At least you're OK
There's a specialist carbon fibre bike frame repairer in Melbourne who comes from the aerospace industry who can ultrasound the frame to check the integrity and is reputed to do excellent work... might be more cost effective than forking out for a new frame. The guy was featured in a past Mountain Biking Australia mag.
Ouch!
Awaba cost me plenty about 2-3 yrs ago. Was racing and heard the leaders behind me and took a sneaky look back. Looked back just in time to see the tree I was about to hit dead smack in the middle of my stem. Result was one $5k BMC FS01 frame snapped in half! Crap...
Sounds like that poor 'dale is off to the glue factory. Got pictures?

Let me get this straight...So the bike didn't contact the tree, just your shoulder? And the load was too much for the frame? Man...how's your shoulder?!?!
Fine. Not even a bruise. And just to clarify - there was no frame impact at all. That's why it has me baffled, same with the cannondale boffins too. My biggest prob is getting a replacement before the Scott in 2 weeks...
So are they going to replace it under warranty? Surely the frame was deficient in some way?
