Langkawi MTB Race - Video
I went to Langkawi with high hopes for a good race this year. I got all sorts of problems which cost me any chance of that. However, I did get a very good Australian 19yr old to ride with my helmet cam for the short track XC race. 85 riders on the startline. Crazy speed throughout. Extremely aggressive.
I s'pose not many Nobmobbers will have done any XCC racing (just 40mins long) so I thought you'd like a view from the very very front.
The Giant rider is Lachlan Norris, the Spec rider is Burry Stander, the guy in the French National colours is Thomas Dietsch (the French National Champ - not an easy title to win).
Hope you enjoy my editing etc. Its just 1lap of the action.....

Do you or Jen have a race blog. sounds like you had a few dramas over there.
Jen and Vavina looks like they did pretty well and great result for Jodie Willet as it was a pretty strong field.

To have gone through all the training, fork out the cash and all the prep etc.
Do tell?
I'll put up a little blog on the race.
Jen and I were both really disappointed, but thats racing. The cash wasnt an issue as it was so cheap (cheaper than living at home for a week for sure!)
Glad you enjoy the video though.
not that i can do any better, but after 4mins of video, i'm still waiting for the "mtb" part to start...
Was that a road race??
Nice vid though
It was stage 5 of a 5 day stage race so was run at the main sports complex on the island which is part of suburbia. Don't know if many multi day races finish with the equivalent of a criterium but I think its pretty common on the shorter road tours.
Makes it easy to get the officials and a crowd there and puts on a more interesting show. The first 3 days of the race were through the more remote parts of the island so I expect they would have been more like "normal" MTB races.
It may have lacked a technical course but there's a lot of skill and guts involved in that kind of racing. Plus your heart is in your mouth the whole race.
There's a lot of "freeriders" and "all mountain" riders that shrug their shoulders at xc racing but having done both for many years I can vouch that xc racing is just as rewarding/fun/scary as any other riding I've been into!
good vid quite enjoyed that ,there is a bit of a drop /jump at 2.15 that must be the MTB part sorry that you guys didn't have a good race ants I know you were pretty G'd up about the trip.
Yes - it does look like its not very MTB.
Our sport is a funny one - everyone thinks they 'know' MTB riding, and that their version is actually the real version.
Look at downhill racing in the early 90's - Mammouth Mtn etc. Downhillers would never race that now. You could do it on an XC bike. I am sure I had posted a video up of that and called it 'Downhill' people would also think it was tame.
There is no need to divide the sport. We are all riding bikes, offroad. Thats it. Those guys racing the XCC at the front are all flat-out amazing bike handlers. All of them (for example) would ride Hammerhead at Stromlo, without a dropper seatpost, on a 1.9inch tyre and rigid fork.
They also have horsepower to burn.
They are mountain bikers, just like the free-ride crew, or the downhillers.
Anyway - I have written a report of the race in the blogs. I have about 50 trillion work emails to be dealing with, so better get back to that....
