What's peoples thoughts on this one, is it any good as an event/race? 9km on the black stuff?
Thinking it might make for a good first 100km?

Who's planning on doing it next year?

Not me mainly because I don't like the sound of the point to point bit.

Its a great race, and possibly the best way to do a 100km. Its almost certainly the easiest one out there at the moment (assuming you dont race it at the very front).
good tracks and a hot shower to finish.

As Brian says though, its a point to point, so its best done with a support person to drop you off at the start and then meet you at Stromlo for the finish.

Also, March is a busy time of the year for events this year. The James Williamson Enduro, Capital Punishment, The Mont, National XC round at Awaba and Loop the Lake which I might miss in 2012.

I don't mind point to point, I always have a support crew Eye-wink
I'm in Queenstown the first weekend in March so could follow the next few weekends with the James Williamson or CP. Choices to be made. I'll have to see about loop the lake as Liz might be keen to do that.

Don't agree with the comment about CP being an easy 100 km - the climb up Stromlo after 85 kms puts it out of that range. The Husky (if dry) or the Bigfoot would be easier tracks to do 100 km on. Probably even the Fling, if it were only 100 km....

My concern with CP is that it links three great bits of sniggle with some fairly lengthy boring bits - the ride along Sutton Rd and then across to Majura, the untimed section through the 'burbs, followed by the slog out through the arboretum and through to Stromlo Park are all pretty tedious.

If I do it this year, I'll do the 50 to improve the sniggle to boring ratio a bit (and more accurately reflect my ability.....)

now that's just crazy talk.. calling the fling easy Smiling

I think that out of all the 100's I have done, I remember my one fling as my toughest race for sure. (perhaps it was the heat)

But I'm back again and I'm looking to HTFU up a bit more in the next few weeks.

Well I've already paid for my ticket (100km), as long as it doesn't rain I've heard it's a good event. Point to point can take a bit to organise sometimes, however, I understand a shuttle service is available, not sure what the cost is though. Luckily for me my son lives in Canberra so I'm relying on him to drive me to the start and pick me up at the finish.

The Backyamma bigfoot is the easiest 100k as you have no hills to climb. The only negative if you live in Sydney is the 5 hour drive each way to get to Parkes.

I think Capital Punishment is a great event and I appreciate that to link up some great trails to get a really nice taster of what Canberra has to offer they need to add a few boring bits in between. I had an absolute shocker with mechanicals last year which included riding standing up for about 45 kms with basically no seat. Still thought it was a fun event. Make the most riding through the burbs, we had a good group who just talked bikes for the 9 or so kms and there were plenty of locals out wishing everyone all the best.

The finish at Stromlo was awesome and that last climb is not all that bad as it's at least up some techy switchbacks and not a long slog up a fire trail. It was also all worth it to fly down the luge and the other trails that took you back down to the finish. The family came down and had a day at Questacon and met me at the finish line where there was enough to keep everyone occupied, fed and happy and then we had a nice meal in Canberra that night.

If it fits in with whatever we seem to have these days that fills up every weekend then I will definitely be going back.

I've done both now, the 50 in 2010 and the 100 in 2011, and will be back again in 2012. I enjoyed the track and whilst it's not all great single track there's enough to keep me interested. Not too hard hill wise. The shuttle back to the start point is free and apparently pretty quick and easy (haven't used it myself)

Hi all,

Looking for an entry for Cap Punishment 2012 - Will take either a 100 or 50km entry although 100 preferred.

PM me and I'll take it straight off your hands

Hugh
