What is the Mont 24hr?

It's catching up with mates you haven't seen all year. Trying to beat the team captain. Cranking off the best night lap. Stumbling amongst a sea of tents. A great excuse to buy new bike bits. Wondering why you do it at 3am in the morning. Saying you are in it just for fun but seriously trying to beat the field. The great mix of all types of riders that compete. Wishing you remembered your pillow. Looking for the best cappuccino fix. The massages. The local derby between friendly teams. Eating as much food as you want all night long. Discovering there is some sweet new single track. Being more excited than a wolverine zipped up in a sleeping bag full of prairie dogs. The mechanical that converts your bike into a scooter at the halfway mark. Keeping up with a Pro rider for 5 corners before your legs give out. Vowing it will be 6 when the next one shoots past. Checking out the latest bikes. Drinking Red Bull and Gu till your head spins. Standing at transition wondering where the heck your next rider is. The bravado of claiming you were close to the 4 note 12 second fart. Claiming 5 riders at each climb. Coaxing your lights through the last 2km. Slipping on someone else's knicks just before your next lap. Double flatting and realising one of your team took your pump to inflate their bed. Half an hour after the event thinking it's one of the best things you have done all year. Putting your hand up to ride the last lap. The questions raised at 3am and -5 degrees. Wok fried bacon at 6am. Having great fun. Taking the next day off work. The beer at 24hrs and 10 seconds. Packing up and agreeing to do it all again next year.

One of the guys in the bunch that camped next to us was a crazy Israeli who rode in pink Crocs on flat pedals on a single-pivot Santa Cruz AM bike. We didn't need to tune into the event radio station - he provided the entertainment for the evening, seriously funny dude.

Apparently he rides in pink Crocs all the time

Surprise of the weekend was Hans almost setting the fastest lap of the team, on his last lap ... on a demo Lapierre 26er!

love your work reminding blackflash that his team came in 89 places behind yours.

On that note we had a race long tussle with Whisperer, Steve01 and Gazza from the mixed nuts team. They were ahead of us after the first lap and then dropped behind a few times with mechanical problems. Our laps were more consistent so we swapped places a few times. Coming down to the final three laps we were just in front. It was probably a tactical mistake winding up Steve01 just prior to his lap as he put about six minutes into us. Added to the drama was me needing to do a decent time and get through before the cut-off. We ended up sneaking through with 45 seconds to spare so got the last lap in and ended up finishing somewhere in the high thirties overall with the mixed nut team way way back in the forties overall (I will leave out the bit about them only having 4 riders, a borrowed bike and a very quick female rider cause it detracts from us finishing ahead).

ps, I does what I can. Laughing out loud

If I could ride anywhere near as quick as him it'd be just plain bitchiness, instead of good old jealousy lol. Eye-wink

Antsonline,

I was behind a group and thought "man - I could make you all 3mins faster a lap just by teaching you to spin your gears instead of turning such a huge one!"

Hey, I was in the granny and I've got got a 34 tooth rear. What more do you want? Oh, the humanity....

Hawkeye, thanks for the vid!

For some reason that didn't render at the uploaded resolution of 720p, so I'm trying again with a version under 10 minutes that cuts out the boring bits (Green Mile)

Thanks mate.... But as i reminder you on Sunday, the biggest surprise of all..... I didnt break anything! Not even a flat! And we all know that in itself is a minor miracle! Mind you, i still managed to crash into the rotunda that the guitar guy was in... Dont ask.
Maybe if i was using your team mates tyres, i could have just ridden over it... 5 inch tyres... imagine that rolling up behind you. "track!, i mean, really wide track!"

pancakes's picture

Mate, that was dead set an accomplishment for you. It would be a major bummer to crash out and not be able to continue due to breakage or worse, injury. You must be getting sedate in your old age?????

Speaking of injuries here's hoping for a quick recovery for the poor guy who broke his femur. I rode past and there were about 6 people attending to him. It was obvious he was in a bad way but he was saying "ride on! ride on!". What a guy!

And how many mechanicals/flats were there in the 1st quarter of the first lap. The climb to front 9 was like you were riding through an outdoor workshop. The calls of "you OK?" were thick and fast, and good to hear.

As for AB on the Moonlander, he put in some killer times! Little did I know what a gun he was when I called him up as the last minute replacement. Glad he said yes. He hadn't even ridden that beast on a track before! I can only imagine it would be both demoralising and perplexing to get passed by it.

...and by accomplishment, I mean not busting something. How you managed to do a reverse stage dive will puzzle scholars and commentators for years.

I was out when the drummer was belting the skins, and I mean belting them. I was in a hole and needed a lift on that climb and the bizarreness of a drummer...on a stage...in the middle of a forest...at night...rocking out was as good as a gel. No...better!

GAZZA's picture

Drummers? Guitars?
Where you kids eating those fliagaric mushrooms that were in abundance around the track?
I hate typing but will try to put a blog up this week.

Matt_B's picture

the drummer on the 7pm lap was one of those things that drifted in then drifted out of consciousness what goes on a lap ......

hawkeye's picture

That drummer was awesome. I thought I was in The Muppet Movie!
