Close neighbour to Sparrow Hill with lots of fire trail and a decent length of single track to boot.
The Ride Canberra site describes the main forest entrance as being the corner of Kowan Road and Sutton Roads. There is a parking area 5km into the forest along Kowan road with gates that may be locked. Call Canberra Connect (13 22 81) for the combinations or ride from Sutton Road for a warm up.
Kowan forest has been on the radar for some time, but came into it's own during 2011 after road construction put an end (for this year at least) to 24 hour racing in the nearby Sparrow Hill.
Note that the 24 hour track used in 2011 is in the East of the forest, a 12km ride along firetrail from the entrance on Sutton Road. You can also access the 2011 Mont course from the Sparrow Hill car park as the entrance is only 150m up the road.
There are other trails closer to the official trail head but we do not have details of these as yet. Feel free to post those up if you are in the know!
Note: There are only a fraction of the firetrails in the forest on the map right now. We like to map them all to get better statistics but that hasn't happened yet. If you use this map be aware you will likely get lost 
The 'official' parking area for Kowan is pretty much in the middle of the forest, on Kowan Road. From Sutton Road, turn East and head up Kowan Road (firetrail) for around 5km. That said - this is a large forest and there are plenty of other parking options available. |
