Sub 6 Fling :-)
First thing, what a well organised event this is. The place was just totally buzzing. The scenery on the course is just amazing as well.
I didn't know what to expect going into this. Looking at what times it had previously been done in I was thinking 6.5-7hours and considering my stomach issues of late I was just going to see how I felt after each stage.
The first stage went pretty quick and I have an average of 22.2km/h. Got to Wingello oval and new even though that was quick I wasn't able to eat and drink much. I topped up my water, had a bit of coke and was off for stage two.
The second stage was good for me although I was not feeling the best. It certainly helped that we had been to Wingello a few times so the single track was quite familiar. I stopped at the water stop to top up but only took on about 500ml of water. The elites caught me on the KOM climb so I might even make it on SBS if on next week.
The third stage for me was where I totally fell apart. By this time as well the course was quite technical and there we heaps of half flingers still out. There were a couple of close calls when they would just stop in front of you. Bakers Delight particularly bad coupled with the fact I was totally shattered by then.
When I got to 10kms to go I started doing to sums and thought, gee, I could do sub 6 here. I pushed on and came in at 05:45:53 (with the 2 x 5 minutes deducted to cross the level rail crossing) which I was stoked with. My plan was to make the 2012 Dirtworks the one to crack the 6 hour mark.
Overall there were a few nobmobber's with awesome times today..

Well done, mate. Awesome time, even without the nutrition dramas.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it out there. No mention anywhere of 'bast*rd paddocks'
Great time Brian, you've trained hard and deserved that. Well done.
Well done Brian, that’s a great time for the fling, you’d be on for a low 5s in the DW100 with those legs.
My race was a little different, I really should have packed a hammock for the amount of times we stopped
thats great Brian, well done, all that training has paid off!
Well done Brian, thats a great time mate. Good work and you have done well with all the training.
The course IMO really seemed to lend itself towards a 29er. But no taking it away from a sub 6hr, well done.
Will done Brian. Very fast time!
Awesome result... and you were worried that 7 hours was the average time before the race
I'm going to have to work hard to catchup after my forced 3 months off
Always knew you had the ability to do good race times. Really happy for you that you turned all the training into a good result.
Well done, Brian, a great time (it happens to be pretty much the same as mine!).
Thank you all. No time to rest now though. With the 8 1/4 hour at Awaba in 2 weeks I think some short fast rides are now required
Great effort!
Awesome result mate.
As my main training partner over the last few weeks, thanks for keeping the motivation up.
I would have to say there are no slack days - and the results are showing.
Well done - great race !
D
Excellent ride Brian ! I didnt expect to see you at the transitions each time so was pleased to see you there for the start of the last stage. You are certainly riding well - well done
Must be all the road riding...
Congrats mate!
Hey Shaun,
Sorry to disappoint but I just checked SportTracks for the last 3 months and I spent double the time on the mtb to the roadie. The biggest difference though is there is nearly zero stopped time on the roadie.
Cheers
Brian
Leads to less stopped time lol.
Great ride Brian. Well done.
I'm currently sitting 50th for the 2011 XCM series
