Awesome
Wow got to the event car park around 6:30 thinking I'd have enough time for a warm up ride no no no people had already started lining up at the start line so I joined the que around 4 rows back from the front. The start gun went and the pace was on, remember thinking it can't keep going like this or I'm going to blow.Half way through first stage heart rate came down to more of endurance rate, went through transition at Wingello oval on the front of a pack of four they all stopped for water and I was left on my own had to chase down riders around 200mtr in front to get onto a wheel
First bit of single track on the red loop I found out I hadn't mastered the new 29er in tight corners yet and started loosing ground to the group I was riding with wasn't to concerned as with fire roads up ahead the new Specialized epic goes like it's got a motor hidden in the bottom bracket.Must say the 2/10 gearing was perfect for this race.
Stopped at the last transition sculled a few cups of gue left and chased down Tate and joined his group for a while until the single track where i backed off a little worried about cramps down the track further saw Tate again with a puncture, that sucks.Felt good through the nasty brokeback section and later was getting excited when I realized had a chance to come in under 5hrs so really amped up the pace crossing in 4:54:06 was stocked

Sub 5 - well done !! Sounds like that epic is the bees nees !
Fantastic result Steve!
Your clearly feel no pain.
Congrats!
Top race mate!
Who says the old blokes aren't competitive?
Well done '01!
Fan-bloody-tastic result! That new pacemaker that came with the 29er seems to do the trick...
So on marathon races, which do prefer - the 29er or the Ibis?
Sub-5 hours, that amazing. Agree on the motor in the Epic, once you get it up to speed it just hums along.
as others have said but consitant too. @GAZZA - you've still a few years to go before you're Steve's vintage, be interesting to see results then.
well done mate, you had a cracker. yeah my race wasnt without incident, but am pleased with the time given my hiccups.
its not unusual for me to hallucinate in a marathon, and so i wasnt surprised when i saw a dude approaching somewhere from my left only to disappear as quickly as he appeared. i thought "that was really weird", but didnt have the brain power to assess what had just happened, so carried on. later i found out that it was a mirror! hhaha ! how to F with ones mind with 100km in the legs! brilliant!
then i realised it was the mirror also!
Well done Steve. I thought they nearly forgot your category at the presentations though.
Well done Steve.
