Wombat 100 2012
The meeting times are 'ready to ride'. If you need time to prepare equipment then please arrive a few minutes earlier.
Woodend, Victoria
Round 1 of 2012 XCM Series
The Wombat 100 was launched in 2007 and within three years, became one of the premier marathon events in Victoria. After a break in 2011 to allow the event to move back to its preferred month of April - the Wombat 100 is back in 2012!
With assistance from the Wombat Mountain Bike Club, the Wombat 100 features some of the best single track riding in Victoria. The event is staged from the picturesque Cammeray Waters at Woodend, only 60km from central Melbourne and 40 minutes from the airport.
The Wombat State Forest, located just outside of Woodend hosts a world class marathon course that includes over 50% flowing single track (including the famous Wombat track), fast fire trail, pine forest single track and 4WD trails. No tarmac, guaranteed! Riders have the option to ride the full 100km or the 50km half course. There is also an 18km course for junior riders under the age of 16 years
New for 2012, the Wombat 100 is the only event in Victoria to form part of the popular Real Insurance XCM series - combining some of the biggest 100km events in Australia into a competitive marathon series. With rankings and some big prize money up for grabs, this is an opportunity for all the Victorians to build up some series points before heading over to NSW to race in the remaining XCM events.

Here's a profile from last year
Just got the email entries are filling up fast.
I'll be driving to Alice Springs that weekend.
Do i take a detour? I really should be in Adelaide or Port Agusta by Sunday though!
Hey Gaz
Forget the Wombat and head for Adelaide and check out Eagle Park and Fox Creek. Then make your way up through Flinders to Melrose and Mawson. Awesome!

I'm meant to be driving straight there and doing all the touristy bits on the way back after Martine has flown out to Alice to meet me.
It's quite some detour and will probably add two days onto what's already an epic solo drive.
Just set-off 2 days earlier
It'll cost me to much. Especially with two weeks off at the end of the trip.
Keep the suggestions coming though. I'm wracking my brain for a way to make this viable.
I hear ya brother!
Pack some warm clothes as its currently 6.3 degrees C

So what times are we thinking for the 100. Looking at the last time it was run the times seem slow compared to other marathons. Quickest elite male 05:19:33 and quickest elite female 06:17:46. I'm a little bit worried about this one

Last year was 10k longer so 2009 is more relevant. For me it's under 6 hours and within 20 minutes of the guy who beat me last race.
My aim is to finish Top 20 Masters. If Only I knew who the other 19 riders were !
Sorry to disappoint you Dicko but you're a veteran for this one. Categories and rider numbers are below.
Elite (All Age) - 31 male - 10 female
Junior 15-18yrs - 1 male
Senior 19-29yrs - 19 male
Sub Veteran 30-39yrs - 69 male - 4 female
Veteran 40-49yrs -72 - 70 male - 2 female
Master 50-59yrs - 20 male - 1 female
Grand Master 60+yrs - 0
Cyclocross (All Age) - 7 male
Single Speed (All Age) - 6 male - 1 female
Really.
Yep
The way the XCM series works we need big numbers!
Re finish times - if its dry, I see this being fast. People are fitter this year. The series last year has focused minds and training....
4hrs20mins max in the guys.
Women will be interesting, but its a good field....
You guys are lucky I have the most competitive field in over 40's
Maybe this says something about the sport !
Can somebody take my bike down (and back)?
Much?!
I cant wait to get the marathon season underway. Packed the bike last night, still pondering over drink 'strategy', disappointed they've taken most of the hills out (its under 2000m of ascent now for the race), but still so keen to hear the crack of the gun, and the clip of pedals, and switch through the gears as everyone tears off down the trail.
Hope everyone has a good race. I'll see most of you down there. Hope everyone has a good ride and enjoys themselves.
Lets get some good points in the bag early in the series...
We're packing the car tonight so we can hit the road at 6am. I'm looking forward to get the first race done. Fast forward 2 weeks and i'll have 3 done for the year
See you down there.
hope you packed your torque wrench.
Well no rain in Melbourne today. Looks like conditions will be pretty good on Sunday.
Have a good ride down there fellas. I am sure you will all smash out a good time
Good luck to everyone in the Wombat.
Just bumped into @antsonline at Melbourne airport. Poor bloke ripped a tyre when in 3rd place about 30km into the race. Mrs Antsonline Jenny Fay won the women's though. Is she the best female enduro racer we've got? Most probably.
Her Rockstar buddies did well in the men's with Shaun Lewis back finally to the winners podium with team mate Dylan Cooper 3rd. Adrian Jackson split them to add some colour to an otherwise black & white podium.
and how did you go Brian?
Brian, had a great ride, I guess he finished in around 5:40. They are staying out at the race venue so probably won't get phone reception. Dicko also went really fast and got 7th or so in 5:20.
And how did @ps go?
I had a tough day, ended up 4th so can't complain about the result. I think Tate had a good race, he finished in under 5 hours. Gav also punctured and pulled out.
gave me somewhere between 12th and 18th overall (depending on where you check, hopefully find out tomorrow).
it was h.a.r.d.
km of singletrack after km of singletrack. give me hills anyday!
glad to be back home now though with my feet up for the next 6 days till we do it all again!
@Fatboy, those are very kind words.
I am sat here at my desk just thinking about what might have been. I dont normally take things like punctures badly, but I am really annoyed about this one.
Anyway - its all done now, and its not all about me.
Your thoughts on Jenny are very kind too. She rarely looks on Nobmob, so I can get away with this sort of thing every now and again...
Jenny works ridiculously hard, she trains harder than nearly every guy I know, and has made huge sacrifices to get fast. I write her training for her, and coach her through it all, but its her that does the hard work. I take some pride in her success, but your question about being the best female enduro racer is very flattering.
Frankly, I think she is the best Enduro racer - full stop. Man or Woman. From a non-biased perspective - she is now unbeaten in any marathon in Australia - of any level (including an Epic battle with Jenny King at last years Nationals in Qlnd) for 2years. This weekend was the 2yr anniverasry of her last 'defeat' - which was a 3rd place (or maybe 4th - I cant remember) at the National Marathon Champs in Avoca.
There is no guy out there who is unbeaten like that.
That being said - the next race is only 5 days away, and its going to be harder than ever for her. These races are getting flatter every year (is it just me that is noticing the trend away from hills?), and everyone is training harder.
I'm off to get new tyres, and hopefully Jen is somewhere recovering!
See you all in Canberra.
