Yellomundee Lantana Lash
There's a car park (click for foggy picture) on Springwood Road - just down the way from Hawkesbury Heights if you're looking for a suburb name.
Yellomundee April Lantana Lash!
Have you ever been spiked when riding past some Lantana at Yellomundee Regional Park? Well here’s a chance to extract some revenge!
NPWS in conjunction with WSMTB and BMORC are holding the inaugural Lantana Lash for MTB riders. We aim to clear a significant area close to the MTB tracks, and help stop the further spread of Lantana in the Park. Details are:
• When: Saturday 14 April, 2012, from 8am to about midday (but anytime you have free would be greatly appreciated).
• Where: Meet at Yellomundee RP top gate (ie where we normally drive in for races)
• Wear: Boots, long trousers and long sleeved shirts. NPWS will provide gloves, but bring some if you have them.
• Tools: Bring loppers and cutters. NPWS will provide some tools, and chemicals.
• Lunch: NPWS will be kindly providing a great BBQ lunch.
• Contact: Please contact Ray Rice at [email protected] if you can come. (mob 0419 495 150)
This is a great opportunity for ALL MTB RIDERS WHO USE YELLOMUNDEE to demonstrate that we care for the Park. It will also be an opportunity to meet with members of the Yellomundee Aboriginal Community Workshop and discuss how we can work together for a better Park.
It’s time to give something back - see you there.

Good timing Ray, I was just updating the BMORC news page and was able to add a link to here.
I have to check the missus' calendar but I think I will be in for this... lantana sh#$s me!
Over the past few years, NPWS have been doing a great job with the Bushcare Group and some contractors in reducing the lantana cover. The effects were really noticeable last November - there were areas and views that I had never seen before.
The veangence of a group of mtb riders will really help.
What's the ruling on power equipment? Cordless recipro saws are excellent for this job!
Hi Rory - power is OK - we just have to watch the safety issues of working near other people. We will be cutting and moving the cuttings, then dabbing/spraying the stumps with chemicals. Probably working in small teams. We've used powered hedge clippers before with great effect to cut back along the trail edges.
Hope to see you there, Ray
Not sure how many have done this before but the time between the final cut and posion being applied is short and powersaws may be a pain.
Please explain Wes.... I don't know the procedure? Interested to know.
Sometimes it's easier to use a hand cutting implement, get a nice clean cut and paint on the poison almost straight away (within 10-20 secs). This ensures maximum absorption of the poison before the cut develops a skin or seal.
Someone who knows more can correct me if I'm off course.
JP has hit it on the head.
Will try and get out there to hook into that horrible lantana.
Some people at the Oaks trail hosting indicated they might be able to drop round afte 12pm (after work).
Apologies, hopefully your able to find this thread, but looking like you'll get there as we are eating and maybe packing up. Sorry for the bum steer.
Al
Reminder for the day, don't want anyone forgetting.
I'm disappointed with the numbers. I believe less than 1% of Mountain bikers put in their 5% towards trail care.
Don't forget a lot of people only have the weekends to hang out with their family, as well as work shifts.
As I have previously discussed with some, I know a fair few guys that are more than happy to get cracking one day during the week, but as is the case with almost everything, the more people you involve the less likely you are to please everyone!
See ya all there.
Fully get you JP, just expected a bigger turn out.
7 or 8 blokes ready to work will get a lot done just remember to say thanks for helping to the riders as they go past.
Well I probably won't be able to turn up as the wife is sick as... have to see how she is in the morning.... could really go for some plant destruction fury.
I know me jeff adam etc can be better utilised during the week, i am heading out to the grotto in the morning to do some cleaning up of ferns, they growing fast, also will be fixing anything that motos and gang have stuffed if anybody wants to meet me out there, will probs be down there at 9am????
I have 2 shovels , big secatuers and rake for handywork!
Week day one was being talked about will mention it again today.Earliy start ones to for summer to.
Sorry if I offended anyone with my comment above, it was not my intention.
Was pleased with the turn out and the job well done.
Thanks everyone who was able to make it out.
Photos to come.
Vickii is still very keen to run a weekday event for the Mountain Bikers.
I personally cannot do weekdays.
JP, can you organise this with Vickii, Todd and gang?
Photos look great.
I'm really disapointed I wasn't there
I wasn't offended Tim.
Looks like a good turnout and the result is awesome! Well done guys.
Well done Tim and gang, it does look spectacular!
Good job guys, the only down side to this is that it will all need to be done again in twelve months.
why will it need to be done again if it done wright its done may need a little follow up but its good.Would be hoping to get the whole area[this stand] done in 12 months.
Now that it has been properly cleared and the stumps applied with Roundup, it should not require much to keep it clear. We'll keep an eye on it over the next few months and apply any follow up "vengeance".

Don't know if it's suitable to Yellomundee, but my family completely eradicated lantana from our property by pulling the stuff out of the ground using a tractor. Basically ferret in until you find the main trunk, wrap a rope around the trunk a few times, then pull the whole thing out of the ground with the vehicle.
Again, have no idea whether that's even feasible at Yellomundee, but it's another approach and worked for us.
I think you're on to something there Jim. Machinery would have certainly helped the cause.
Can help when clearing an area but they are tring to keep the natives if possible.
@Jim. We used a similar process, but they sent in the Hulk in stead of machinery.
