Hey Alex, I will be down in Jindy at that time so a couple of days of dh sounds good.
awesome man sounds good
Im not 100% sure whats happening over the xmas break for me, but i'm keen to go!
I've booked thredbo for the 30th for me and my mate colin from U.S., will decide closer about the 31st... We'll be around albury/beechworth from 27th ish.
can't wait!
i don't see your name on the confirmed to go list???
Duck for cover....
I guess he'll be there just a couple of weeks before.
Alchemist - who's lost his hats
Are you guys interested in doing just one day of riding? Personally I'd be keen to try at least 2 days of riding down there to make it worth while. Trying to work out what days to schedule off work.
I know if you haven't been before you have to do some half day training or something to learn to use the lift or something?
we are riding at cannonball, thredbo on 30th AND 31st (NYE) prior to that were hitting up albury region (beechworth, Mt stanley, and possibly nail can hill, just for a looksy)
..noobies like me have to do i think a couple of hours training first which is using the chairlift, and i think making sure you know your way around a bike enough to not go splat straight off the runway check out you tube for a look into a run, there is a helmet cam full top to bottom insight there, looks super fast and fun..
Just booked some accomodation for 2 days of riding
Also checked out the youtube video and it looks pretty wicked! Can't wait.
you guys are in for a treat, enjoy

Mate, that is a wicked video. I wish it was me!!
Just a question guys... for anyone that has ridden this trail before. Are there many large jumps / flys to negotiate? Because I did not notice too many of them. There were a few water bars at the start. And maybe one or two larger jumps to get past on the trail. But it seemed to be primarily a fast, downhill / technical trail.
Can anyone shed some light?
The notion that TV adds 10 pounds... but that looked pretty tame for DH?
I think the Stromlo XC course had more technical bits
<canofworms>
Personally I think it's an awesome trail, but is it worth all the 'DH' hype?
</canofworms>
"not to hard to ride, but difficult to ride fast" is how it's described in AMB. I think it will be good fun with some definate novelty value.
-maybe the hype is generated by the operators.
not forget this is smack bang in the middle of a national park surrounding the only (I think) permanent alpine village in oz, just how much risk do you think they would be prepared to take.
All that said, I'm sure its a trail that'll never see this little bunny on it.
Hmmmm... the dude is doing a few small hops and such up the top, but then in those trees it seems to get twisty and the speed lower.
Would the extra travel in one of their hire machines (Kona Stinky this year I believe) outweigh the confidence instilled by riding one's own (XC) steed?
Sure - if one could just hop on the course maybe. But given the 'insurance' training session that's required first I'm thinking the day would be better spent grinding up some hills (and maybe riding back down 'em?) to be honest
eh- part of why im looking forward to it so much is its NOT so technical, and stop/starty as all our rough as guts local downhills are! fast, flowy, dreamy im sure if we close our eyes, we can bullsh&* were at whistler..hehe if just for a sec. ..no but there are so many crazy downhills on offer locally, some unridabley so for those of us without a deathwish, riding super fast down a mountain for at least 7 minutes with some 86 corners, bridges everywhere, occasional jumps and drops, wall ride action, with a 4X track around the corner and some good xc'ing sounds pretty damn fine to me! and CHAIRLIFTS lest we not forget!..CHAIRLIFTS DAMN YOU!!! MWUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH...oh well im excited anyway..
Helmet Cams are terrible for making a track look flat, boring and easy. I used to have one and took it out to Stromlo about 3 times. I ended up with about 6 hours of footage that would make Auntie Esmays family holiday's look extreme.
Yeah, but can anyone get me an answer? How many jumps / fly's are there on this course? It doesn't look particularly difficult to me. However, I will always stand corrected if need be.

There site also has trail maps and lots of info, although nothing as specific as " the cannonbal run complete with 86 turns, skinny to bridge to pallet drop, x meter gap jumps etc etc"
Shot them an e-mail and ask Liam
alright guys, thredbo dh track is 'easy' it is alot harder if you go fast as in as fast a full on racer's who are gunning for it, it's also hard on your arms and wrists and finger's if your not prepared for it. MOST DONT, I do and it helps, the tracks only air times I can think of are;
-the large waterbars on the start fireroad (they weren't bunny hops but launching into the air in the vid)
-the tree jump which is pretty much a table top thingy,100% rollable I do so it must be.
-any rock gardens you decide to jump, but only pro's jump em so dont worry.
-the wooden jump after the big long fast straight about halfway down. VERY easy to go around and is about a 2.5m-3m gap at the moment, not big jump sounds big isn't.
-Lastly is the final drop and wallride you can get air off, the drop is also 100% roallable and the wallride is 100%avoidable if thats they way you go.
Hope this helps, ps. I dont think Ill make it boys because im going up about 2 weeks earlier for the national round 3. So good luck to all those nebies and more experienced guys going ti's all fun and easy track, yes newbies have to do initiation on first day which is them checking your bike works, checking you can ride a bike well enough to ride track, involves riding down 9steps and a little rocky thing very easy. Then about 10-15mintues telling you how to use the chair with your bike, nerve racking first time, easy afterwards. Then they take you down one run stopping heaps explaining the whole next section and riding it. It's then lunch and the chair closes to bikes for 1 hour lunch, then you have the arvo free for riding on your own on the track, and afterwards whenever you come back your free to do the same!
....as he cleared up a lot of questions. Mine is, Am I allowed to use my Giant Reign or do we have to hire the RawNRG Iron Horse bikes?, what about full face helmets are they required?
Thanks
Greg
your questions Trouble didn't.
For another perspective, I found the Sam Davies short vid of the 2006 Nationals on this you tube thingy.
Enjoy

There's nothing difficult there, you wont be having to make massive gap jumps or dealing with sidewall tearing rock gardens.
The scariest part is the the first corner; a steepish fire road descent into a sharp loose gravelly right hand corner. There's some water bar type jumps, maybe a box jump and the final exit of the single track is a little drop.
greg, im sure your reign would be fine, the hire bikes are just there if you want to use them, they prob just check to make sure itll survive the course (which im sure it will!) but maybe give them a buzz just to be sure theres no minimum travel thing or something? im sure though its just a no kmart hardtails policy as for helmets, i believe full faces are compulsory, but they do hire all gear aswell...your gonna want one anyway to be honest, those kinda fast trails are great for offering a series of new dental work you hadnt planned for
hey guys, Q&A for thredbo, about the reign, mate the reign will be fine, I suggest maybe softening your forks ans rear shock up for the dh, unlike having them harder for XC, but the raw nrg bikes are usually for people who want to try dh on a pure dh bike, or for those who want to try dh but cant afforda dh bike or a proper mountain bike,so in the end a reign would be absolutly fine for the course, may get a bit bumbpy but hey means you dont have to spend extra $$$ hiring a bike.
-Yes it is 100% compulsory to use full faces on the course, if you dont have one ring up rawnrg as they have them for hire....to save the xc guys spending money on a full face when they only do dh 3-4times a year! and armour is "highly suggested" by rawnrg but NOT COMPLUSORY, I used to race in armour, then did a race without it and I have regretted it since as it happened to be the time I crashed hard, and it involed one of the nasty stakes holding up the track tape sticking into my gut...did do to much damage dont worry. I do suggest it if you dont have it, I suggest hiring it again from rawnrg, who have it all for hire and have all the right stuff in all sizes too just ring them up and book ahead because you dont want to turn up and they fully booked out of full faces and you need one to ride....you get the point
PS. I have just come back from a week up in the snowy, a school camp, part of it was a hike involving taking the chair to the top of the hill and walking out to kosi, but when we drove past the servo' in thredbo I saw that rawnrg are now using plenty of KONA bikes.....I could be wrong i didn't get to talk to them at all but I saw a fair few KONA bikes that I think might be for hire... if you feel like checking give them a ring...
hope this helps, Ben
Looks like they've recently put a 4x track in at Thredbo. Wouldn't mind a couple of fangs on that between dh runs.
yeh saw that, looks like theres plenty of good riding to do there mind u i got all excited about the 4X at stromlo, until i tried to run it and realised i cant jump 4X size stuff for shit lol..oh well practise practise!
Yeah I take my dirtjumper out to stromlo 4x a fair bit and I can only do a couple of the jumps and roll the rest. It's fricken hard. I was even talking to a dh racer who works in one of the bike shops down here and he said he is freaked out by it and showed my his war scars all up his shins from it, eheh. I hope the Thredbo 4x is a bit easier.
Hi Guys, extremely keen to join the group, but I'm toally stuck on transportation. Does anyone have any car space and inclination!? You may have seen my post on Farkin; happy to split the fuel of course and will bring the beer
I'm heading down with the family on the 28th to stay in Jindabyne with family friends, I haven't yet told them I'm sneaking off to risk life and limb on the CANNONBALL on the Sunday.
yeh sorry man, im all over the place road tripping with my mrs, so no room
was -3 today at thredbo ooh yeh!..
g'day fellas, I've just joined your site, also heading down to Thredbo, hoping to ride 30 & 31 Dec, don't know if someone else has already mentioned this , but you have to do complete the "Initiation Session" before you're allowed to ride the Cannonball Run. The chairlft pass costs $79 per day and the Initiation is an extra $20, but you have to book for it. I did the Initiation last year, its actually pretty good because the guide dude stops about 5 - 6 times down the hill and lets you know what's coming up. Anyway hope to catch up at Thredbo. (sorry posted this comment as a blog by mistake as well)
Ok we know who we are and why we are there
As we will have to be briefed before the onslaught and that could as I’ve read take over an hour, what time should we all book so we are in the same class?
I leave for Jindabyne in the morning (Fri 28th) so could I ask one of you guys to call me with the booking time that suits all so I’m in the know.
I need to hire a full face helmet as well.
I have changed my tires to the 2.4 ice huggers and my rims to my old 2.5 wide mountain killers so I’m ready except for my deflating rear shock. I have brought along my old 200mm sprung coil shock just in case but if anybody going has a spare 200 mm air shock I would be happy to hire it for the day
As I am based in Jindabyne I can carry four people and bikes to Thredbo or am happy to accept a lift as that would leave my car free for my family on the day.
I am so keen on this ride my pants are splitting
See you all Sunday

Hey Pikey, just give rawnrg a call and say you want to be in the initiation group with Shamus(thats me), Alex and Nate (Thats on the 30th). The initiation starts at 9am. They told me to be at the rawnrg shop at 8:45am to sort out paperwork and pay, etc
Better book in that helmet when you call
....well sort of, im goingbto do my first run with my soggy shock & if it feels too plush i will change over to my sprung coil shock, either way it will be all good, see you guys at 8:30 at the rawnrg servo, greg
