Tool & tube storage options?
Hi Team
Historically I have used a canister in my second bottle cage to hold a tube, lever, co2 cartridge, co2 head, quick link and a $10 note. I like it because it's solidly mounted, quiet and fuss free. Unfortunately my new frame only has one bottle mount so I need an alternative, any suggestions?
Im not keen on saddle bags as they always seem to fall open. What else works for people? Id prefer something that's always on he bike

used saddle bag for 25 years, never had one come open - though I have left one or two open .
But also used pocket in minimalist 'classic' camelbak for CO2, levers, multi tool and note, then tape tube to frame, I always tape link to cables (can find it there easier). Phone I carry in shorts. Sometimes use pouch behind headset for food/gels and phone.
Bloody blowin from WA. Trying to appropriate my name.
You may well be older than me BUT you'll NEVER be SLOWER!!!!!
saddle bags that have velcro that go all the way round (never clips) - never had my any work their way open (as above have left them open though). The other alternate I use sometimes, is tape tube to seatpost, carry pump next to drink holder (either with a velcro fastener or tape), tape a lever under the tube (if tubes are tight), and not bother with a multitool.
3 options,
1 - get some more bottle cage mounts installed on your new bike at your trusty bikeshop.
2 - http://www.lezyne.com/organizers#panel-7 fits everything you need, slips in your back pocket.
3 - Get creative with the duct tape and stick everything to your bike.
Now, now oldandslow. Don't get too precious about people with similar names. I mean, there are a million Lachlans, Mitchells and James out there and nobody complaining. Just remember that while you certainly are old and slow, lots of others are too. Anyway, I'm way slower than you
I've had saddlebags come open at the zipper. Good quality Topeak one, too. I don't use them on the mtb any more.
Instead I stuff it all in my Camelbak MULE. However, I'm starting to ride more often without a Camelbak, so might have to look at one of them organiSer thingies (why carnt the Yanks spel propper?)
Hence forth I'd like to be known as "SpokeyrnDokeyer"
Hey oldandslow, looking at your avatar I think you should be now known as "Noneshallpass" pronounced with a thick kiwi accent
keester it.
Oldandslow - wanna bet - Grass has been known to grow as i pass it, snails honk before they overtake, I've even asked Shimano when they comin out with a reverse gear! And if that aint enough to convince you i have a heap of unused large chain rings taken from various bikes I've owned .
I'm so slow when i ride that the last XC race I entered I got a loitering ticket! Anyway I was built for lovin not fastin err going fast.
Anyway you lot keep paying your taxes so the Govermint can pay me pension so I can go ride more
(soz about thread hijack - but it was hiz > fault)
Fair point, oldandslow. You do have more dokies on your spokies than me. I'll duly change my moniker to something more fitting. Maybe slowandold?
I have 2 jet black saddle bags and they have never came open while riding. On my 69er I've managed to fit a 29 tube, 26 tube, tyre levers and puncture kit. Pump is mounted under/next to my drink cage.
I don't like tape, what happens when you get a puncture. Do you dump your old tube and/or tape in the bush? Take out what you bring in!
You don't want known as slowandold. That name is already taken by some fat old bastard over on rotorburn.
It is what all the racers do don't they ???
That's why we ride with mates, innit?
It's your mate who always has the very thing you need when things go pear shaped.
So ....?
Check out the Behold tool pouch on this page. Mounts under your existing bottle cage.

Looks like it mounts on bottle cage bolts instead of bottle cage, not as well as!
Or are there a duplicate set of bottle mounts on the back of it which we can't see in the photo?
PS: Once scattered the contents of my saddlebag all over the Kalamunda Circuit because the zip came undone. Only realised when a puffing & panting rider came up behind me and asked - "Are these your car keys mate?"
My reputation precedes me... on one of our Mont training rides one of my workmates asked me if i had a chainwhip and cassette lockring tool on me ... wtf?
Yes , There's duplicate mounts for the bottle cage. Better description on this site. Just have to look under bottle cages on the left. www.aspirevelotech.com Just got some parts from this lot. Great to deal with.
I use a small clip on saddlebag with tube, multitool, co2 carts & levers.
The Trek one has been great but the Topeak micro has been known to open on it's own accord (Especially descending Muffin top) so it now has a thick black lacky band around it.
@barn - Ah, get it now. Ingenious!
I always ride with a bladder backpack. (Frees up the hands for the important stuff - like keeping bike on track!)
And into pack goes pump, tools, tubes, CO2s, gels, spares, ...
Major advantages; Handy, no effort at all to get quick top ups of liquids, plus ... back protection.
(Got knocked off once where I skated down the road a good few dozen metres on my back. Luckily had a backpack. Spine is something worthwhile keeping pristine!)
Disadvantages; ..., ..., ...? Oh! Got one. It can be warm, but not to the extent it's uncomfortable. Only that your back will sweat more.
And then there's the chance you end up in backpack neverneverland., like me.
Always looking for the right pack; right size, volume of bladder, good fit, logical compartments, ... cos the one(s) you have are never just right; either too bulky, small, ... for that specific ride! LOL.
warm weather small under seat pack & pump top tube-cold weather backpack with everything in it!
get a top cap stem mount!
