Rear d adjustment

I just replaced the cable for my rear d (XT shadow 9 spd) and am having trouble getting it to stay in gear in the middle. High and low screws are adjusted perfectly, changes are quick and sharp both up and down. The middle 3-4 gears jumping around all over the place. Any ideas?

I suggest going to you tube and search for xt shaddow derailleur setup or similar. There should be numerous videos showing step by step guides how to get them running smoothly.

Does this happen on the stand as well as when riding? Did you change outers and inners at the same time? If no to the first and yes to the second, then it's possible the cable outer is being pulled when the suspension moves....

It is also possible that you have the cable clamped at the alternative side of the clamp screw affecting the pull ratio. This can lead to jumping cross a gear in the middle of the cassette, with adjustment seemingly perfect at the extremes.

Personally, I've found outers need replacing on mountain bikes far more often than inner cables. Once they get grit in them, getting rid of it is impossible. Sad The only option is to replace the outer.... unless the idea of having a sentient transmission that makes its own decisions is appealing Eye-wink

Inners, on the other hand, can be wiped clean with a rag and only need replacing when frayed, or kinked from taking a hit in a stack.

So maybe put on some new outers? The gold standard is of course Gore RideOn - teflon coatred, sealed goodness that you can ride in pretty much any weather and still not have to adjust for a year. Smiling

Its either where the cable comes into the derailleur or on the shifter. Happens on my roadie some times.

Took all the outers off and shot them with lube spray then ran an old cable through them to displace the built up grit. Attached it all, re-tuned and it ran like a dream this afternoon. Thanks all for your suggestions

Hmmm... maybe not impossible then... the outers i used to use were XTR with the white teflon grease in them
