Bike rebuild
NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.
Now that ive got a second bike, i've dismantled my old ridge rider to give it a bit of a birthday and am thinking of upgrading bits and pieces. So before i journey into the wilderness of the web, what are a couple of good web sites to get gear from (new and 2nd hand).

Wiggle.co.uk, chain reaction cycles uk, cycling express Australia (price match wiggle and CRC), Jenson USA (strong Aussie dollar helps), eBay, Torpedo7, Velo gear, Bikes 24, Amazon. They should keep you busy for a few hours. Good luck.
I've got loads of mid to high end second hand stuff for sale.
Xo, shifters and mech, Fsa carbon cranks, bars, grips, seatposts etc etc.
Well.......the rear derailier needs replacing, so i thought i might as well change the whole gearing system, for something better and lighter. Also interested in replacing the forks. And then when i think of it, maybe get some lighter wheels. But then i think "How far should i go", and what size gear to i put on it. It's my first bike rebuild, so i'm a bit unsure on how far to go. But if it gets rebuilt into a beast, i will be a happy dad.
I'm not sure what the Ridgerider was originally specced with but my advice is to sit down & decide how far you want to go with the build, rough costing then work out a well balanced spec.
What I mean by this is keep everything around the same level of performance & purpose.
I know a few builds that have ended up as a mess of poorly matched components either in function or value e.g heavy freeride forks with way too much travel on an xc bike or an XTR crank & superlight wheels on an otherwise Deore specced steel framed HD trail bike. (Yes, superlight wheels are always nice until they break)
With most rebuilds the latest Shimano Deore or STX gears & brakes are great value as are Sram gears if you want something different.
Forks that doesn't weigh too much or cost a lot start with Rockshox. From the Recon up they work well & you pay more on the better models mainly for travel or a weight saving. A Reba is a great xc fork for vfm, weight & performance.
Good wheels are a good addition but can be added at any time.
I've built loads of bikes now & it's very addictive. The cabling up is always the last bit & is the breathing life into the new bike for me, then its ride & tweak!
