Sticking brake issue

Hi all, out on a ride this morning I had my rear brakes decide to stay locked on after descending a steep hill. It took a few minutes of trying to wriggle the pads in the caliper and rotating the wheel back and forth before it finally let go. Any ideas what would be the cause of this? Bike hasn't been ridden much of late, Elixir CR Brakes.

Unusual, given that Avid uses DOT fluid, but DOT fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs water) so if it's been sitting around for awhile it's possible it has absorbed some and this is what has expanded and caused your brakes to stick.

Replacement with some *fresh* brake fluid of the appropriate DOT number should stop it happening again.

Gee Muzza you must have had the brakes on for a long descent if they kept steam pressure for a few minutes!

It's quite likely if the fluid is old, the brake seals are gummed up with emulsified brake fluid which is restricting them retracting.... or the cyclinders may have a little corrosion which is binding the piston.

Flush and bleed with new fluid may get you back to a happy place though my experience with early Elixir CRs was that they periodically built up with air in the master cylinder leading to dragging brakes... one hypothesis being that the taper bore cylinders can allow air in when the levers are released quickly. Flush and bleed usually fixes the problem again for a few hundred Km.
