Kennys Mudhole
I have the following timber structure that I built as a boat slipway recently but ws not allowed to use at it needs a DA on the Lake shore. It is solidly built and i will fix timber slats across it to form the running surface. I will do this at my own cost and some riding friends have agreed to help install it over the Kennys Mudhole.
the idea is to bridge the area, and reduce errosion.
Please can someone let me know who I should contact to get acceptance to undertake this upgrade.
Alternatively I can dispose of it in a council clean-up but that seems a waste, and I am sure it is not just me who has gone over the handlebars recently in the last mudhole.
Thanks
Ian

I take it that Kennys mudhole is at the start of the route - in between the 2 pipeline sections and after the tree root slight step up? It looks like someone has tried to fill in that hole in the past - with the random (and slippery) wooden slats. There is an alternative line uphill from the mudhole...
I don't know who you would contact, though I'm sure that there are many on the forum that would know.
Overall, I'm all in favour of placignt eh 'bridge' increasing the flow - without losing the 'technical' aspects and creating a paved track - and reducing the erosion of the track.
....I would suggest that the timber slats are covered in chicken wire to reduce slipping.
is what I am led to believe in the park. This will be fixed sometime!
Natural features Robbie? - maybe we could "recover" some of the natural concrete, railway tracks etc for a bridge?
Presumably the GNW bridges, paths, steps etc are naturally occurring materials?
In one of these posts it was commented that the trail along the pipeline was slated for closure by NPWS due issues with the pipeline, slope, run off and the mud hole.
The upper track is the one GTA and NPWS have been working on with the intention it will eventually become the only route.
MTB and narrow bridges seem to go together. I love that little bridge in High Roller.
There are other MTB projects in the Newcastle/Lake Macquarie area that may require a nice little bridge.
I will send the photo and the concept through to the relevant contacts tomorrow as the idea definitely has merit.
A similar idea has been floated before though and the following issues were thrown back at us.
- Area needs to be able to be driven by fire fighting vehicles.
- The area needs to be able to be safely mown.
- There is a reluctance to use treated pine, no idea why as I thought the new stuff was all arsenic free?
Can you message me the dimensions of the structure? I ask that as if it is for some reason not suitable for Kenny's, maybe it could be used somewhere else.
If though it can't be used at Glenrock, I am sure HMBA would have a use for it at Awaba.
on how it must look natural when the place is full of weeds & various dumped materials.
Thanks for the comments. The structure is 3.0m long and the main posts are 700mm apart. It is treated pine, and to be honest I was going to use the same for the slats.
I walked into Kennys yesterday and tried to fill the mudholes with some woody debris, and all but one rider used the top route whilst I was there, so maybe the riders are already taking the lead.
I also enjoy the trails at Awaba so if Glenrock is a no-go then I am happy to get in touch with HMBA and take it over there.
I'll keep in touch with the comments and go from there.
that lower trail is no good! turn left at the tree for some sweet singletrack & rock garden. The Kenny's boghole that does need fixing is the one after the Shute....
