I,m looking at upgrading my wheels, thoughts on a good 29er XC tubeless wheel set, QR front and 12 x 142 rear?

I have Mavic SLRs on my Kona Hei Hei but they are about to release a whole new 29er range. I have also got Mavics on my Scott MC40 that are still going strong after 5 years. I would not touch Easton wheels.

There's soooo many options these days at a vast range of prices.

Good point, up to $700. I guess Im after personal experiences, what are riders using themselves.

Nice wheels but a little heavy at 1800g
I had a lightweight set handbuild by Nick Both ( wheels by Bosch ) with Tune Hubs on crest rims with Sapim spokes.
Weight = 1388g! Incredible difference in acceleration and nice looking wheels although a little out of your price range.

I've been very happy so far with my Stan's ZTR Crest and Stans hub...light, strong and tubeless ready...just what you need for the trails!

most popular after market rim at the scott this year seemed to be stans crests - 2 years ago it was mavics - buying local, the stans rim/hubs seem to provide reasonable deals

I think that was about the time that Mavic stopped CRC selling their product into Oz after the local distributor complained.

Sucks to be them. Smiling

I've got Stan's ZTR crest - the only issue is what tyres you going to run? If over 2.1 would suggest you consider a wider internal width. The Crests are a little narrow for large volume tyres IMO. I'm running Racing Ralphs so they are adequate for those.

I'm running Racing Ralph's snakies front and back on my Crests, but I'm thinking of changing to Nobby Nicks on the front and RR on the rear, snakeskins of course!

Lightest out there and reasonably priced.
And they seal up really well tubeless - used to ride them on my Scott Spark and loved them
And of course the stock wheelset with the 3.3 hub makes a pretty cool sound, nice and loud.... and works really nicely (It may be irrelevant performance wise but hey whats wrong with a little warning to those riders ahead of you that you're coming for them Smiling )

Be aware that crest have a rider weight limit

Speak to Greg at TWE (Two Wheel Enterprises)

I got a pair of 29er wheels built through him for $895 i think it was. They weighed in at 1800 odd grams with an XX 10 speed cassette.

I asked him what he would supply me if i wanted reliability before weight and he supplied me 2 of his hubs with DT Swiss spokes with Stanz Crest i think they are hoops.

He has one of the best warranties on the market as well. I know of one person who didnt service his hub and needed parts to repair it. When he spoke to Greg he simply gave him a new hub as he likes to keep his customers happy. He figures the small outlay on stuff thats not quite warranty work is well worth it given the extra business it brings in. Lets not also forget your supporting a local for not much more cash and provide you live in Sydney you can simply drive to see him for repairs and warranty work if needed Smiling

Thanks everyone for you comments/suggestions, I've just ordered a set of wheels from TWE.

Cheers
