My commuter hardtail is need of new chain rings, so i was thinking about swapping out the 44t to something bigger like a 46 or even a 48. Has anyone sucessfully done this and if so what (if any) issues* do I need to beware of?

Cheers
Phil

Just make sure the rear derailleur cage length is ok.

In what respect Brian? Longer or shorter? I've got an X-9 long at the moment.

How big is granny? Many FD's have a capacity limit of 22 teeth eg 44 - 22.

You might also need to run a narrower range rear cassette eg 11-28 instead of 11-34T so the RD can cope

If you google derailleur cage length there's calculations on what length you need.

Front is 22-34-44
Rear is 11-32

Seeing as how this is a commuter bike and I never ever use granny or the 32 can I swap the cassette out for a road cassette?

9-speed road? Might not be that easy to get now. 11-28 mtb should be doable.

I just did a calculation based on this: http://bicycles.stackexchange.com/questions/7264...
and given my current cassette size it looks like my RD will not be able to cope. So I will def need to go to a 11-28. Thanks for the heads-up guys.

Right, time to go shopping.

Other option is to lock out granny with the end point adjustment on the FD ... if you never use it. Would be cheaper Smiling
