Some of the best MTB experiences come out of exploration rides

Back in the day that was what MTB was all about, you'd look at a map find an old mineral exploration road, or have half an idea of where the moto guys had been riding and just went an looked. Navigation was part of the skills

It was an adventure and, sure, sometimes you had a horrible day of hike a bike but often you'd find a great trails. Over grown rocky and you had t think about it.

Bombing down an unknown trail honing your reflexes, your wheel on the tyre of the guy in front. Bonus points if you goaded them into a crash and went over them without crashing yourself...

That sort of thing is frowned upon now.

Too often the modern mountain bike experience is heading to to a purpose built trail network, sign posts and berms everywhere, trail groomed smooth. Sure that type of riding is fun too but when that's all you do I think you are missing a big part of the soul of the sport.

@ Flynny

You summed up what my vid was all about, thanks!

Thats how i spend most of my time on the bike.Bashing through the bush trying to find the faint line i saw on google maps that i know is an old moto/fire/ creek line.

It took 85 minutes to cover about 8km on the back country section of the above vid. When you do slog on through and find a great bit of single trail or a sweet downhill rocky creek bed km's from the nearest firetrail you know the chances are that no one will ride it again untill the next time you come back.

This was the third time in a year i had done this "ride". Rode more of the mad boulder strewn creek bed down hill sections everytime. Fell off more times everytime.Loved it more every time.

The first time i rode it solo (bit mad, definatly frowned upon,)the next two times i took different buddies and they both loved it.

cheers

Exploring is the best part about mountain biking riding!!

That track reminds me of a local area where the motos tear it up. Half the fun is trying to stay on your bike while avoiding the big ruts, or not washing out in what seems like a foot of sand.

I thought I recognised the area, and then the gates at the end confirmed it.
