I recently bought a new set of TWE 29er wheels and after a couple of runs I can say they are great. They have made a considerable improvement to handling and I can really tell the difference between the weight of my old wheels and these new ones, make climbing and lifting the front wheel a lot easier.

I'm glad I bought them.

Stupid website, thats for sure.

So assuming you got carbon?
Which ones?

Been looking at a set of AM ENVE wheels myself.

No carbon, though my frame is, just the alloy ones, still great.

I get special prices on some other brands of wheels which I elect to pass up and only use Greg at TWE to build mine and pay full price! I don't think I've even tensioned a spoke since I've been using his wheels.

Hey @geoff63, I've also got an Epic 29er and have been thinking about new wheels..what's the details of the wheels?

I went with what Greg, the builder, referred to as all day riding XC wheels, the set weighs in at about 1680g.

As all wheels are custom built you are best to call Greg and discuss what you are looking for with him, he pretty much won't build/sell/send you specs until you have spoken to him.

No doubt you'll be heavier or lighter than me, you'll have a different riding style etc, so more likely than not your wheels wont be the same as mine.

+ 1 TWE. As Geof above said Greg will want to speak to you it will be worth it though, added bonus you will be looking after a local artist who stands by his product 100 %

I had to get a couple of wheels in a hurry when my back hub failed 2 weeks before the fling and Greg built the wheels overnight so that I could train the very next day. He also offered to refurb my old wheels which they definitely need. Greg is an interesting character but if you need wheels you have to get them from Greg to be sure you've met one of the characters of the MTB world. So I agree with all the positive sentiments above.

The new wheels are my first tubeless ones. I'm taking time to adjust and have had 2 "burping" incidents since starting. One this morning on one of the bigger drops in Manly dam and I now have some sore ribs to show for it. Is that sort of thing common or did I just let the pressure get a little low? Certainly felt like I had enough air in them but then I'm the worst bike maintainer in Sydney, bar none.

.....on the Wednesday before the Highland Fling resulting in 2 spokes down and a dent in the rim. They were Stan's Crest rims rebranded with TWE stickers. I took my wheel to Greg at 8pm on Wednesday night and picked it up on Friday night. He REPLACED the rim under his crash warranty, put all NEW SPOKES in, and serviced both the front and rear hub. He then remounted the tyre and added sealant. All in, that cost me $145. I would highly recommend him!

I am pretty sure you will find that Greg does carbon wheels as well now. I can guarantee you that they wont be the price of an Enve set either.

My 29er wheels from TWE were $899 and weighed in at 1800 grams with a SRAM XX cassette and tubeless valves/tape which given i told him i want strength before anything else is pretty bloody good. Given this is also what Greg supplied he will stand by his product should i manage to somehow break it which speaks lots for the product he supplies Smiling

Yep - Greg does carbon 29er rims - Supagav (Gav Burland) has been racing a set on his Cannondale this year.
He reckoned they were really stiff, and felt good.
You could get a lighter rim if you went with a SUPER light alloy version, but the stiffness of the carbon is what makes the real difference.

Greg as a bloke - as has been said - legend, character, artisan, tinkerer - good guy, but part of a dying breed.

+1 for TWE.

I bought my power tap/wheel from him and now he is at Newtown his just around the corner from my work Smiling

Yeap as Anthony said I have a carbon 29er rear wheel from Greg at TWE the wheel was built up on his branded hub using revolution spokes into the carbon rim he had in stock. This wheel has been very stiff and reliable, I broke a spoke with a stick a while ago, 2mins with the spoke key and the wheel was back to dead true and I raced the rest of a 8hr race on it with it missing a beat or going out of true.
I have tried all sorts of things to hurt this rim but have failed. sure they have scratches but they function perfectly. Just for comparison I also have a Enve carbon front wheel, they both feel as stiff and as nice to ride as each other. sure the Enve is 50g lighter but your wallet will be a lot lighter after paying for a Enve rim let alone a complete wheel build.
Gregs crash replacement is awesome also. no bike shop will offer that sort of deal.

get on them they are great!!!

Thanks Geoff. After checking his website I kinda expected your reply, but thanks anyway for the info.

Supagav, care to let the cat of the bag and tell us what Greg charged you for the rear wheel?

Supagav's picture

So the price was for a sample carbon rim built up as stated above. I got this wheel about 18 months ago now and it was about $800 I think. For the money though it has been awesome!
Yeah it seem like a lot of money but if I don't need to replace a rim and rebuild a wheel every 6-9 months I am about to break even in cost now but I have had a MUCH better wheel over the last couple of years without down time of getting wheels rebuilt etc either.... Plus I trust them completely to get me through any ride I will do.
I am always of the idea of do it once do it right.
