Strava help

I've recently started using Strava and quite like what it has to offer.

The only thing I'm having a problem with is, if I have my ride as private, I cant see where I'm ranked on the segments. Is there a way of changing this?

I don't mind having my mtb rides public as I don't start from the front door of my house. But when I'm doing a road ride, I don't like the thought of advertising to the world that I have a half decent bike in the shed. Surely there's a lot of other people with this opinion or am I just missing a setting in the program?

The other thing that seems strange is when I upload a ride, Strava changes the details. Eg. the last ride I did was tracked with Endomondo and was 36.3km, 1:26:46 & 296m elevation. When uploaded to Strava, results are: 36.9km, 1:27:35 & 422m. Any ideas on why this could be?

BTW, I use a Samsung Galaxy S3 on a handlebar mount to do the tracking.

Dont advertise that you spent way to much money on your bike and register a Huffy on Strava instead.

Noone gives a crap what you ride anyways...

Private rides aren't shown in the leader board. .

There are settings to only show your ride to people following you but it isn't 100%. You also can set a privacy exclusion zone but if someone exports your ride this is bypassed. As for road rides, don't start and stop your GPS at your place.

There is a privacy setting in Strava so that it doesn't show the part of your rides that is within a specified distance of your home and/or work. Go to the privacy tab under Settings.

Strava always shows things slightly different to the figures from my Garmin. I think it just takes the raw GPS data plots and does all the additional calculations itself so they come out slightly differently.

You will not be ranked on any segments if your ride is set to private.
It has to be set to public to see how you done on a segment.

In settings/privacy there is an option to hide your house/workplace.
Note: that any segments in the privacy zone will also not record your rank for that segment only.

As far as the difference in strava to endomondo, I would guess its a difference of calculation. I have a similar difference between Garmin and Starva.

And just remember, if its not on Strava, did it really happen Sticking out tongue

Thanks all, I'll edit my profile and privacy settings.

I do like how Strava adds about 130m of climbing Smiling

The below link is great for comparing different rides covering the same segment

Bloody hell!

I didn't realise you could go so in depth with it. It all helps push you that little bit more to beat your last time which is a good thing.

Now to start inching my way up the leaderboards.....

Get the same problem with elevation and distance on almost all the plotting programs. In Google maps for example 1 uncorrected metre on Garmin is about 1.15 metres on Google. They use different methods and formulae so expect a difference. I've no idea which is more accurate.

Maybe rethink your handlebar mount location and use the top tube of the frame - can't see it as well but reduces tha chances of writing the S3 off in a crash - provided it doesn't clobber your knee while cyling.

Read Zoom's great link below for explanation of why differences occur

I like this link to analyze your Strava segments

You can easily tell how much you have improved/deproved

Meant to add previous post: depends on which time you upload I think. EG. Garmin has three times, Total Moving Time (garmin stops the timer when you stop moving), Elapsed time (total time from start of recording) and 'time'. eg from one ride of mine: TMT=03:44:51; ET=04:11:30; T=03:45:39. Not sure what your S3 is set to but maybe this the issue? Maybe?

I upload the travelling time but I think Strava works out the total time by using the time started and time finished stamped on the ride.

My S3 is in an Otter Box case, that is in turn, clipped into the belt holder, that's tie wrapped to the stem. The Otter Box cases are bullet proof so it should be ok. I use the S3 when off road but put it either in my camelbak or in my shorts pocket.

Hey Brian
According to bmar560's link you hold the all time record for laps around Awaba (red loop). Nice.
